Hi...what part of MN are you located in? I don't know where Pierz is located. I'm just east of the Twin Cities.

I trail ride/horse camp every weekend. 90% of my riding is in MN. What kind of info at you looking for?

There is a good Yahoo List, you may want to join. Take a peep.

I have an Icelandic Horse, what breed do you ride?

A good place is Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park.  We live in Northeast Iowa.  Have only been there once but definitely plan to go back this year.

Pillsbury State Forest, near Pillager is a great place to ride. They have a nice horse camping area. There is water there, but you need a generator to run the pump.  Edit--or rely on others to have a generator.  People are very nice.  Once somebody starts their generator, the whole camp usually fills their buckets.  Kind of funny, actually.

Maplewood State Park, near Pelican Rapids is also nice. Nice day parking area and camping area. If you plan to camp in the fall, when the colors are good, plan and book your spot early.

You say you are new to trail riding. Both places have easy riding, but are also very fun and interesting. Wide trails are available at both places. Narrow, unmarked trails are also available at Pillsbury, but you still cannot get lost, as they always seem to end at a road or main trail.

Tamarac along the St. Croix River is GREAT.  The trails are beautiful as you wind up and down along the river.  It is not flat, easy riding, but I don't think it is very difficult either.  There are river crossings and if you are up to an eight hour ride, you can ride to Danbury WI where they have horse ties behind some of the local restaurants to have lunch.  It is alot of fun.

The only thing to be aware of is that they do not have water there.  I have never hauled in, I just water at the river (Which is not a far walk from the campsites) as many people do.  Just some horses don't always drink from it the first time because of the iron content.  Mine never had a problem with it.

Campground is nice too.  They have primitive bathrooms and the lower campground is better as it is closer to the water and trails.

Trails are Forestville are very nice, about 15 miles. The campground is very nice, some primative and some electric sites, I suggest you make reservations. You will need shoes or hoof protection to ride the trails, as they are heavily gravel. The only negative about this park is the Park Ranger. He makes the rules as he goes.

Pillsbury..great place to ride. VERY BUGGY~!! Hilly narrow trails. Last year...down trees all over the trails. You may want to call to see if the trails have been cleared. Carry a map, you may be turned around or lost. Many deer trails leading to no where. Spring or fall is best. Primitive camping, there is a water hydrant....BUT, you need a generator to run it. You can always rent one for the weekend.Maplewood...very nice!!! Huge campground. 98% of the site are very unleveled!! Bring wood or blocks to level out your rig. Reservations recommended. Best time is fall. VERY BUGGY rest of the year, spring is okay. What kind of riding are you looking for?

Tamarac can be a bit challenging for new riders. Bees can be a problem as well.

You may want to call about the campground at Kathio. I was there years ago, and it was just a parking lot. And that is where you camped. I would go back. Let us know what you find out. Thanks!
