What is the difference in a rebuilt engine and an overhauled one?  Is one more likely to last longer?  What are the cost savings by using one over the other?

Just Curious - I had to sell one of my best dogs to get the money to do this?  On one hand I have friends that I trust saying I should get a low mile used F-150 with an I-6 300 CID and use that one.

Other friends that I trust have advised getting a overhaul or rebuilt engine in my current truck 1993 F-250 Supercab 4X4 with a 460 CID engine in it.  I have in the past 18 months rebuilt the front end, rebuilt the transmission and had a new transfer case put in it.

Just wondering - The only reason I am asking is that I routinely pull (3-5 week) a loaded two horse trailer anywhere from 30 miles to 300 or more - taking my dogs and horses to field trials, where I run my dogs.  I am not a rich pro - but until my 460 started acting up was satisfied with it.

I can't answer your question on rebuilt vs overhauled, but would never trade a truck that'll do what you want to do for something that has less engine, less suspension, and less capability.

I thought they were the same but my "Yankee" family uses the terms to indicate the degrees of new parts.  Here in Texas it's the same.  (Could be age dependant too.)

You may find a low mileage engine from a salvage situation too. Ask around to see if this is an option.

Got a rebuilt motor from CA...I think the company was Sunshine, or something.

OK, off the phone with the "Yanks" and they say an overhauled engine is your engine and a rebuilt is one they replace yours with...this is just one ooooooold mans opinion, take it for what it's worth.

Make sure if you get one in that you get credit($) for sending yours back and having it rebuilt...sometimes the shop keeps this for themselves!

Remanufactured 460/7.5L for your truck is going to run about $2900 according to their price sheet. They also sell install kits with new hoses, plugs, wires, water pump, clamps, and other extras you'll need all in a neat package and claim to save you up to 25% over individual piece purchasing. I know many friends that have Jasper engines, some in truck, others in race cars, and they have a solid nationwide reputation. They also go into great detail of the difference between remanufactured and rebuilt.

Oh yeah, keep the 460, the I-6 is a great torque monster when coupled with the proper rear end, but you ain't going to get to top speed, whether 60 or 90, very quick.

I'd go with a remanufactured engine in your old truck.  Your F250 is a heavier duty truck, you've already rebuilt many of the parts in it and you are less likely to rip the guts out of it towing.  Plus the fuel mileage between the two will be pretty close to the same.

Edited to add:  We had a 3/4 ton with the 460, it was a much better truck to tow with than the 1/2 ton with the straight 6.  There was a *huge* difference between the two, I'd never want to go back to the 1/2 ton.
