To the original poster;
Consider that anyone doing this would have to travel east to west with no trailer, i.e. burning up time and fuel with an empty truck.
"Anyone" being a "small time, man with truck".
I doubt that you could get a better rate if it were shipped on a flatbed that hauls both ways.
The fact that the trailer is worth less than what it would cost to move it doesn't affect the cost of moving it, only the decision of whether or not to move it.
You should probably consider selling it in CA and buying some a replacement in SC. This would give you the opportunity to upgrade, with a $6K or $7K margin (-:
You're not alone in this, people fall in love with $1,500 horses on the opposite coast - THEN they try to figure out how to get them home.

Location: North Carolina | Since you've already posted on the share-a-ride forum, you might consider letting someone use your trailer to move a horse. Instead of paying someone. It's a win / win , they get to use a trailer, you get the trailer moved across the country. |

Ya know the only thing more expensive than that precious gasoline seems to be diesel fuel, and the only thing more expensive than that precious diesel fuel is someones TIME! That is one thing that does NOT come cheap these days. Imagine if someone were to charge hourly for that indeavor like they do at a mechanics garage, or a welding shop... $60-$80/ hr. Yup that's not a real quick trip, I think Reg's a deal!! Talk to y'all later... |

Location: West TN | I would check with a local RV dealership. Most of these come from the midwest. We have a few guys here in TN that pick up their load in IN and then haul to CA. Most times they are dead heading back. This might be a possibility to consider. Almost all of them are using one ton trucks that can pull both a fifth wheel or a goosneck. |

| I'm also thinking that my guestimate was way too low.
I know that with horses my average progress is really about 50 MPH on interstates. Not that I actually DRIVE at 50, but with rest/water stops my progress is about 50 MPH. So $100 an hour is a little more than what folk pay to have their car/truck NOT fixed (see other threads).
What I hadn't figured was that I would be going out EMPTY, the round trip would be at $1.00 a mile ($50 an hour). Then there would be motels...
Not that I need to make money, but I'd be losing $$$ on this.
I could find the time, the biz is just about self managing now, but I can't run a truck on $1.00 a mile.
If I had relatives out there that I actually WANTED to visit it could be different.
Seeing the country ? I've seen a lot of it, seen the backs of a lot of trucks too (-:

I guess its a good thing I'm not a freelance trucker (-:

Location: Western WA | You might try posting your request on Craigs List in both locations as well. Besides hauling horses, someone moving their household or otherwise might have need for a U-haul might take you up on pulling your trailer for their move. |
