Location: Nashville, TN | For a died in the wool Ford owner and in the never ending quest for the best combination of motor, tranny and mileage. I would like to hear from any Ford owners that have this combination in a dual rear wheel vehicle. 7.3L with 6 speed manual tranny and 3.73 rear end It would appear to be the best combination for control, pulling and mileage. The next combination being the above with a 4:10 rear end. Mr. Truck, please weigh in....I need facts. rattler |

At the end of the 7.3 era I think it was a fact that you couldn't get the 3.7something axle in a limited slip version, I think you couldn't get it with the 6.0 at the beginning of it's era either. This mattered to me, I really WANTED the lim slip and wanted NOT the 4.1something.
Then I realised that the transmissions are all indirect these days anyway, so 3.7 vs 4.1 is meaningless without the O/D ratio and rolling circumference of the tires (-:
What I *_REALLY_* wanted to know was the effective overall gearing, best expressed as MPH per 1,000 RPM - answer: about 30 to 34.
So, I went the Duramax/Allison route instead and havn't looked back (at the Fords in my mirrors).

Location: southeast U.S.A. | Reg, We purchassed an 03 f350 with the 7.3 engine, auto transmission, single rear wheel version with the limited slip rear end and 3.73 ratio just as they where on there way out. By the time that we found this one there where few remaining on the lots. Lucked up and got this one before they where all gone! Keep in mind that this is an automatic and that may have made the difference. ,Ardly |

Location: Columbia, TN | My 99 f350 Dually was a six speed with 3:73 and my 06 is Auto with 4:10 and the 06 gets about 25% worse fuel milage but it is getting better with more miles on it. Both were 4X4 so limited slip was not a big concern. |

Location: Nashville, TN | What was your mileage with and without a load on the 7.3 with a 3:73? To get that combination of motor, tranny and gear ratio, was the truck a special order? |
