BOY if you did not go you missed out!!

We went to the camp on the 31st and stayed in the most wonderful camp on the central coast of Calif.  Each horse has his own corral, the corrals were large, and there was water for animals. Camped under huge eucycleptus trees, and had a 6 point buck with two does visit constantly. ( wanted the alfalfa!!) Rode the sand dunes, estuary, beach, and of course waaay up on the peaks for a spectatular view of the Pacific and Morro Rock.  I had put an invite to all a few months ago to join us, and had no takers due to the holiday traffic hassles.  We did stay a few extra days and that meant that we hit NO TRAFFIC all the way back to the high desert of So. Cal. Some folks left on tues after labor day and they also had no hassles. Ok, I am trying to put some pics here so all can see!

Steve, on the grey Arabian!

Looks fun! The last time I was there we tied to trailers (no corrals) and the porta-potti was disgusting. This was many years ago...Maybe 15 or 20. But I do love to ride on the trails. Have they been keeping the trails cleared? Thanx for the pics!

   Yep!

They have a "Friends of the Park" organization, and those foks have seen to it the horse camps are clean, have adequate water, the "facilities" are clean and the experience is wonderful. My wife and I met up with 4 of the "Friends" along the trail, and were greeted by smiles and directions to the best trails to ride for scenery and safety.  While the trails are challenging in places to the non trailrider, for the most part were clear, and clearly marked. The folks from the park friends, can be recognized by a Special Patch on a Kelly Green saddlepad, and really gave out great advise and were only too happy to have us. Will we return????    We are planning the next trip as I post!!    Watch out for the poison oak though!! Also those raccoons will raid your ice chest if left outside your trailer at nite! LOL!!   It was only a 5 min drive to the main part of the park along the ocean, and the Rangers show you all the great sea creatures in the tide pools. Part of the "Dunes", are closed for the Least Tern nesting until Sept 30th. but pathways are clearly marked to access the beach and riding along the beach is wonderful!!  We also met a group from E.T.I., I think it was corral 27,  who come here a lot, and they rave about the place too.

How many corrals do they have? Do you need a reservation, or is it first-come-first-served? I have my own portable corral, but most of my riding friends don't, so the corrals sound good.

To the questions;

Each site has several corrals, the one we used is the bottom one called "Madrone". It has 18 corrals, and yes, you do need to make reservations and it must be a group event. There is a first come first serve site at the top of the area, ntu it is small and only had 3 corrals. It also does not have good shade. You will be camping with in a few feet or yards of your "Babies", and can see if they need anything like sheets or blankets from your site usually. Our site cost us 30 dollars a nite so each family spent about 50 dollers for 5 days and nites of camping. That is cheaper than going to ANY of the regular campgrounds with no horses! More info from this site...www.slostateparks.com and click on the south coast area for Montana De Oro
You can make reservations thru reserveamerica.com also

 Gemm..

You will enjoy the place I am sure. For the non-horsey spouse or friend, the Morro bay dining and shopping, along with the sightseeing will entertain and inform. In fact, just a few minutes south on the 101 hwy, is Avila Hot Springs, and some wonderful hot tubs for relaxing after a long ride with a glass of wine.
