Location: Littleton colorado | I have a 97 Ram 2500 V 10. I would like to increase my pulling power. I am thinking of putting in a new air intake ststem. We just bought a 92 logan 4 horse gooseneck and the truck dogs a little on hills, also thinking of adding air bags to adjust for load level. In Denver colorado. Higher altitude. Any thoughts? |

      Location: Rocky Mount N.C. | Two words for you.........TURBO DIESEL! You pick the one that suits you. You are not going to get much more out of a naturally aspirated gasser without some big buck HOT RODDING. then there will be engine longivity, driving and towing issues. Save your money on the intake and exhaust mods. Unless you are turning some serious engine RPM.....all the time, then those modifications are just a waste of money. I pull with a G.M. 8.1 and at 5000' I can tell a difference in the engines power, it starts to drop off in a hurry. |

   Location: Danielsville Georgia | Not a lot of performance anything out there on the Dodge V10 and have been told what there is is costly.Try http://www.dodgetrucks.org/ its a more or less gas truck performance site witrh a section for v10 etc.Any mods or tricks will be found there.

Any thoughts? bandit56,.....what do you mean by dog down? I figure the logan is steel and + 4 horses = gets heavy! How heavy? The V-10 was no dog in "97" I think it had bigger #'s than the CTD the same year. I don't know of any mods out there that will pay back at all. Maybe keep the tires properly inflated, I had a "99" CTD and it would dog down on the passes out west. I could go faster but then i was pushin it. Our passes are 5-6,000 ft.....your are higher I bet! They all dog down with 9,000Lbs. |

Dogging down a little on hills ain't the end of the world (-:
Tractor trailer rigs with ONLY about 2x your horse power are probably pulling 6x to perhaps 8x your load. Are these guys PASSING you on climbs ? {so what ?}

I wouldn't worry about it, pouring money into bolt-on go-fast stuff will help you pour MORE money into the tank. Relax, take another few minutes per hundred miles to get there. Your highest speed really doesn't affect journey time that much, lowest speed and traffic delays DO.
WRT air bags;
Yes, I really LIKE mine. This is a VERY high (comfort) value for a very low cost. Since it also carries the weight of the front part of the trailer I suspect that it helps the horses' comfort as well. The only caution I'd add is that it COULD raise the truck enough to cause too much "nose high" attitude on the trailer and thereby put too much load on the trailer's rear axle. Just something to watch out for.
BTW, when it comes time to trade - get an oil burner (-:

I have a 2000 2500 with the V10 and have the 3.55...works for me out here in flatland, but I would want something a lot lower for mountain work. You'd get a lot more pulling power for the money I think by putting your money into switching to a 4:10 gear ratio than putting in a cold air intake system. |

I agree.....If it is a 2x4 it would be an effective upgrade....if it is a 4x4 it will get kinda spendy. |

A pumpkin changeout could run $3000 , add in the cold air box $300, I'd just slow down and gear down. Those yahoo's will wait to pass when you can pull over and let them. Remember the "Ponies" come first, then the other folks. The safety and comfort of my horses always is in my mind, and I try to drive accordingly. If some one has to wait for a mile, or even two until you can safely pull over to let them pass, so be it. I live in the desert but trailer to the 6000 and 7000 ft level to ride frequently, so I know of what you mean. ( and I only have a 318 with a three horse B.P. , can you say slow up hills!) Be courteous, and pull over when it is SAFE, and you'll do fine. |

Using tow/haul mode and/or O/D lock-out can get the same effect for $0.
If it is a manual trans, USE the thing.
There's no savings to staying in "Top" gear if you have to change out the rear end to do it - and by so doing lose your flatland cruising gear.

    Location: Vanzant, Missouri | I'm pulling a 3h Exiss Gn with a F250 Sd 5.4L It does great on the flat but on steeper climbs it dogs but it's expected. I even went as far as putting a K&N cold air intake and dual exhaust but it hasn't made that much difference in the pulling power of the truck. I'm looking for a new truck as we speak. Going Diesel!!! |
