Automotive news agencies are reporting that Toyota plans to deactivate front-seat passenger air bag cut-off switches in about 160,000 Tundra trucks from model years 2003-2005.

Most vehicles built after 2002 that have the air bag cut-off switch are also required to have the child safety LATCH system in the front passenger position.

Without a cut-off switch, you cannot safely put a child in the front passenger seat, since an air bag deployment can result in severe injuries and even death to children.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) turned down Toyota's request to waive the requirement on Tundra trucks. Toyota decided to deactivate the switch rather than install the more expensive LATCH system.

The Tundra recall will begin in September, 2006.
