| Depend on how handy you are. If you can install brakes yourself on the trailer, then it might work out fine. I bought a two horse with brakes on one axle and had someone put brakes on the other axle for me so I had brakes on all four wheels. Back in like 1992, it was 90 bucks for it to happen. But I agree with the poster, if you can't get the brakes on cheaply or DIY them, then you may want to pass on this trailer.. it gets dicey hauling without brakes. In the late 70's, I hauled a trailer that didn't have brakes and even though it was flat and brakes weren't required, when I got my next trailer that had them on one axle, it was such an improvement, I couldn't believe it!!!!! A choice between;
1) Get it, but don't use it for hauling horses.
2) Pass on it, for another hundred or two you can probably find something WITH brakes, but otherwise similar.
3) Take it on as a project,
3a) If the axles have "backing plates" it could be relatively cheap, i.e. not much more than a complete re-do of the brakes on a trailer that already has brakes.
3b) If the axles don't have backing plates you'll probably need to replace the axles themselves. This gets gloomy, by the time you get the springs off the axles you are likely to find that those are rusted enough that you won't want to put them back on. It could add up fast.
I'd go for option #2 myself.

Location: Memphis, TN | I'd pass too. Although you may be fine doing some light trailering with this rig that ONE time is all it takes. Several yr ago I had a small 2H BP and a F150. The old trailer developed a short in the wires so I just started using it during daylight hours only for short trips. One day I topped a hill on a two lane rd and there was the mailman in a jeep parked in the road delivering mail to roadside boxes. A car was coming the opposite direction, so no moving into the other lane. I hit the brakes and felt the truck start to be pushed by the trailer. I was not even carrying a horse but on the way to get one. The tires started to squeal and the mailman moved that lil' jeep real quick.....into the ditch as I went by....I was lucky. Got the wires & brakes fixed the next week! |
