After listening to many that  promote this bit, I am considering trying one on my qh gelding who has been ridden, to my knowledge, with nothing but a mechanical hackamore since about 2 or 3.  He's 20 now and doesn't appear to have mouth problems of any kind.  Seem to be limited at what you can do with your horse, with a hack versus a bit.  Any pros or cons on this idea?

Depends on what type of snaffle you want to get.  There are dozens of types (not just brands).  BUT, I have found that older horses don't like change.  You may have some behavior problems if you change something as majior as a bit.  My 20+ mare wont take a bit.  If you try you are going to have a fight.  She does everything asked with a hackamore so I don't see a reason to fight her.

If you're not showing this horse and you're happy with its performance, well...if it ain't broke...don't fix it.

I agree with everyone else.  I used to lease a 12 year old mare that was ridden with a sidepull.  I tried a hackamore and an eggbutt snaffle and she let me know she didn't like it - head throwing, etc.

I got a lot of funny looks from people since you usually only use these for training young ones, but she did fine with it. "Leggs" is a 16.1 1300 lb mare that I trail rode and camped with for 3 years.  She'd been a broodmare before that and the owners had only ridden her around the pasture with a halter.

Thanks, everyone.  I will take your advice and leave a good thing, as is.
