Location: Catoctin Mtn, Maryland | Hello everyone; We have a 1 ton 2000 drw gas chevy extnd cab pickup, 454 engine, 4x4. Please dont ask me anything else about this truck, for I am clueless. We are confused about how much weight we can tow. We are looking to purchase a 3h lq trailer. DHMCO says we can tow anything they sell on their lot with our truck. What say you folks? |

Location: North Carolina | Hi ... Welcome to the gab-fest Your Dually will handle a lot of trailers. BUT, there are some horse trailers it won't, like the 6 horse with 15 foot, slide-out LQ ... Depends on what trailers DHM has on their lot. |

Hi and Welcome to the Forum.
There SHOULD BE a section in your owner's manual on towing and a sub-section of that on 5th wheel or gooseneck towing, this is where you'll find the specs for the vehicle that you have. If the truck is used and the owner's manual didn't come with it you can probably get that info from GM's web site.
Hmmm, 454 ga$ engine

Location: Home of Wild Turkey Whiskey | Welcome to our little forum, I would be willing to bet unless they have a triple axle trailer on the lot they told you the truth as far as GVW and towing capacity. Now are you going to like climbing the hills around Maryland at 30 mph, I would say stay around a 3HS 8' shortwall aluminum and you will be fine, if you need more trailer, you may need more truck. Location: Catoctin Mtn, Maryland | We just purchased the truck, used. I wasn't sure about the engine size, I just guessed. But I remember our mechanic saying 4 something. (hehe). The owners manual came with the vehicle and were still confused......... We are going to be looking at a 2001 Cherokee 3h lq 10' sw trailer on Sunday. I don't have all the specs handy right now, but I was hoping with all this "wonderfull" knowledge here, that you fine people could help. I really hope we can pull this trailer, because the price is really nice. We only haul 2 horses, even though we own "6", go figure. God help us if we purchase any more! What do you folks think? |

I knew that (-:
I'm thinking NEW 8.1 efficiency vs OLD 454 fuel thirst.
They make GREAT ski boat engines, especially if you want to pull more than 5 barefooters at one time - 5 is about all my 351 ford motor is good for.
For slalom the 351 is still tops, though my 100 lb driver and 90 lb spotter grew up. With about 1/2 gallon of gas in the tank I could ski WELL with that crew. |

Location: Auburn IN 46706 | We have a 2000 Chevy dulley also. Our truck has a 6.5L diesel. We just ordered a 8310 American Spirit trailer. I pulled one a week ago, and it didn't have much power left. I do not know the horse power difference between the gas and diesel. It has me a little concerned. Good luck |

Hi and Welcome.
I think about 180 hp on the 6.5, though I'm not at all sure. The old 6.2 without turbo was around 130 (-:
If you're not used to diesels be prepared for some adjustments, the power comes through differently. Not a sports car sort of power, more a tractor kind of power. |

I feel like Reg set me up to do this, the numbers above are correct for your 6.5 but in comparision the new GM Duramax Diesels are over 300 Horsepower and although that number is good, it's the over 600 ft. lbs. of torque that moves the trailer. I being a Dodge guy think those numbers may be stretched a little to pass the Cummins specs. |
