Hi All,
I just came across one of these tiny battery operated portable energizers for electric fence, and I'm wondering whether any of you have used them and have any advice on their pros and cons...

The type I mean take 2 or 4 D-cell batteries, much smaller and lighter than others I've seen that need a bigger, heavier 12v batt. But I'm wondering if they have corresponding disadvantages (as things almost always do).

My intended use is for a small trail/show/visiting corral, surely not bigger than 30x30 feet and probably no bigger than 12x12.

We have a portable corral with the electric controller. It takes 2 D cells and I haven't had any problem with mine at all and we use the heck ut of it. The only thing is the stand that it mounts on broke but I remedied that with a small bungie cord and just bungie it to the post. Puts out a fairly good pulse and it's been in the rain. Haven't had any problems with it.

I use one of these for a 4 acre lot away from ac and it works great...these work great for camping...mine will run over a month on 4 d cells operating 12hours/day.

I use one for camping that takes Dcell batteries. No problems with it. I do shut it of when we are riding for the day.

We use these all the time when camping. On some occassions we have put up two 1/4 mile lengths of poly string with a charger in a high mountain meadow and turned out 19 horses in the meadow. Some times I do a small paddock next to the horse trailer.

Make sure your horses have used it at home prior to being set up in open spaces. I don't leave my horses in it at night or un-attended. I've had elk run through the fence and knock it down.

Here is a picture of our horses in a meadow at 10,000 feet with a portable. We just pack in a bunch of white fiberglass rods, poly string on a reel and charger.
