Location: Sacramento, CA | Do all horse and stock trailers have brakes, or is this a recent thing? I am going to be looking at an older stock trailer (late 80's) and I don't think they mentioned anything about the brakes. Well I guess I'll find out... I have a 4x4 diesel F250 with a tekonsha controller, so I'm good on my end, but what do you look at on the trailer side as far as good, safe equipment? Thanks in advance; trying to do my homework! | My 1984 Trailet had brakes on one axle. When we started hauling heavier horses, I had brakes put on the other axle to help with braking. I am pretty sure that my old 1978 WW had brakes on one axle, too. You can tell by the appearance on the axles if there are brakes or not. Most states now require brakes on all horse trailers. I wouldn't haul without them, I think it is easier on the vehicle/trailer/horses. Jbsny |

Location: North Carolina | Welcome to the forum... Electric trailer brakes are not even good at their best. I would want brakes on both axles. Forget just one axle brake systems. |

Forget just one axle brake systems. i may not go that far, i think they work pretty well with some of these newer model brake controllers. but i do agree with brakes on both axles, if the trailer is heavy enough to need two axles, it needs brakes on both. |

Yes, simple, easy, DIY'able.
Cost could go two ways, if there are already flanges for the backing plates on the unbraked axle - or not.
I'm with Hosspuller, straight electric brakes are poor at their best.
Electric over hydraulic is preferable, though that isn't what you asked.
If I was building "from scratch" or doing a major re-furb I'd probably blow the extra bux and put disks on ("disques" ?).

That was when I went INTO Hi-tek, by the time I got out it was D_I_S_K and I remember the discussions (diskussions ?) over which it should be - for data.
Anyway, they're still discs in the spine - or the Latin equiv.

trailer brake question
