Hello all,

We currently have a 3H mid tack 1995 Sundowner wi. a 10' LQ. We are looking to get a new or slightly used LQ trailer. (Somewhere in the 10-14' foot range with a slide-out.)

Our F-350 Dually has no problems pulling our trailer it fully-loaded.

I have two questions:

What are good quality LQ brands that won't break the bank? Seems like Sundowner has gotten a little crazy with their prices! (Or is Sundowner worth the extra money?)

I definitely want good quality in the LQ, and safety for the horses, but cost is a concern as well.

What brands offer a good compromise of both in an LQ with a slide out?

Also, I know the slides add a lot of weight to the trailer. How large can I go on a slide-out LQ and safely pull it with an F-350 Dually? (Trailer would be a 3 horse with a mid tack.)

THANKS!

There is a company in Circleville Ohio called Cowboy Customs specializing in living quarters. Quality is excellent, options are limited only by your checkbook, and or imigination. They are very close to having a website to showcase their work, I know they will be at the Quarter Horse Congress, or the telephone number is 740-497-8809. They do sell Integrity trailers - I do not know alot about them, but they seem to compare very favorably to anything on the market. I believe they would even do an LQ in another trailer - would be very much worth checking out.

Of course you know you asked a loaded question and you will get a lot of opinions, but since you asked I will give you mine. I recently purchased a Cherokee 3h with a 7'10" lq and couldn't be happier. I opted to forgo the slide out for various reasons. I do see a lot of quality points of this trailer, unfortunately you will probably find very little information on the internet on them. If you can find a dealer or call their corporate number(1-800-654-4967) you will find a lot of good information. I have never found any bad information on them from this site either. There are slide-outs available in the size you are looking for.

You can't beat Whinny Cargo in Ozark Missouri for your L Q.  They sell Dream Coach Trailers. I bought a Cimmaron (CM) that we love. Fiber glass roof has great insulating value. Good quality trailer all around. We took it to Kenny & Glenda at Whinny Cargo for our LQ conversion and couldn't be happier. They are great people, and their work is superior

I don't know about the Cowboy Customs LQ, but as far as Integrity trailers go they are well put together. My friend Tom bought a 5 horse, with 15ft LQ and mid-tack with bunkbeds and mangers. Ladder built into the outer rear tack wall to get to the hay rack, excellent looking welds, no sharp corners in the horse area, and actual door latches for the dividers that are easy to use. The trailer really impressed me for the price. Very well engineered I think.

I would do an online search for LQ manufacturers and see what's out there near you.  If you are ordering a trailer, make sure they know it will have an LQ installed.  Better trailer maunfacturers will reinforce the trailer to compensate for the LQ.  Not all sliders are equal!!!  Make sure you deal with a company that has a good reputation!!  Will your truck be able to handle it?  That all depends on the weight you end up with and that can vary tremendously between different trailer and LQ manufacturers.

Well I have to agree with Sundowner going crazy on their prices part....... it costs a lot of money to advertise like they do and give away all those trailers, and in my opinion at least they are no way close to being worth the extra money. JMO

As far as trailers go I have a hard time finding any I like as well as the custom trailers like Platinum, Elite, C&C and Bloomer. 4 Star used to be on that list but I'm frankly very underwhelmed by them now. As far as those brands go you will need to choose your own conversion company that the dealer works through and as with trailers themselves there is a wide range depending on taste a budget. Personally I like Outlaw, Bunkhouse, Trailboss, and Duster but those three are fairly high end depending on the packages. There are other conversion companies out there that do a great job but those are the more well known nationwide. Your best bet is to find a few interiors you really like and ask around about them and view as many as possible. As another poster said Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus OH in October is a great place to view numerous interiors and trailers.

Thanks so much for all of the input!

It seems like I am having a hard time finding a good combination of decent quality and reasonable price.

Right now I am leaning toward another Sundowner since I can't seem to find some of the better trailers with a slide.

Any more ideas?

Thanks!

Have you tried C&C or 4-star?  There is a 4-star dealer in VA.

Have you looked @ cherokee?  What is your price range?  The trailer in this link is nice for the price.
