Location: Albany, Oregon | Not exactely a horse trailer question....but if it deals with horses or horse people isn't it still related?.....What kind of Mosquito(sp?) repellent REALLY WORKS!!! these are mean big ones! Some products say Mosquito and Fly spray and have the same ingrediants as Fly spray. Flys are easy to deal with! We use fly sheets but can't cover everything. They drive them nuts when they are in the corral, besides the welts and itching. I talked to the Vet about using DEET and he couldn't think of a good reason why not. I have sprayed there exposed areas, use a fly mask and the DEET works for sure. If I can't find somthing that really works I'll buy several cans and stick with it. I'm just getting tired of spending big money on bottles of fly spray with mosquito stamped on it! Oh and yes they are vaccinated for WNV! Thanks...... |

Location: Iowa | I had always heard (as you hear so many things in the horse world--passed on by word of mouth) that DEET is highly toxic to horses and should NOT be used except very, very sparingly. Sounds like maybe that's just an old wives tale, since your Vet says it would be okay. I'd love to use Deep Woods Off on my boys for the skeeters, but have always stayed away from it for fear of making the horses sick. Will follow this thread closely!! I hope it's true you can use DEET on horses!

Location: Rocky Mount N.C. | BACK WOODS OFF works good on me and the horses, spray it on a sponge and wipe it on, lasts until they sweat it off. I think alot of the horse flysprays last about as long as it takes it to dry, if it last that long. |

Location: Albany, Oregon | Clarification on Vet statement (He is a very good vet and has been at it for a long time))....He knew of no Precautionary statement in the Vet world concerning DEET. He felt if it was tested for humans for external use and follow the directions it should be reasonably safe?! I have wiped in on my dogs muzzels to keep them off and it does well with no apparent ill affects. I have wondered why the spray people haven't jumped on the DEET idea...with the WNV issue maybe there is a good reason why not! Any Vets out there with the knoledge we need? ......Just called the 1-800 # on my can of Backwoods Cutter couldn't get an answer from them ...they said talk to your VET....

Location: Michigan | I have seen people spray Raid on their horses, at horse shows. I think that is a bit extreme, that stuff is pretty potent. I've used OFF too and seems to be the best stuff for the skeeters. I will ask my vet about the Deet theory and his take on it. |

Location: CA | I was curious about the DEET vs non-DEET controversy, so I looked it up on the Florida Agricultural Extension site. I figured they'd have lots-o-skeeters down there! A couple of things bothered me. 1)DEET is oily and "can melt plastic and paint finishes" 2) It can also "damage acetate, rayon and spandex"3) Keep it away from "eyes, open wounds and irritated skin". That makes 3 strikes for me! They went on about concentrations, etc. If I were to use it, I think I'd check what my fly sheet was made of - Don't want any "melting"! In the May 2005 issue of Horse Journal they tested a group of fly sprays and ended up having more success with the "natural" ingredient sprays. You could mix a stronger concentrate (when needed) and not worry so much about side effects. I don't know whether the fly spray success would work on skeeters too. Neither of those sources said what the actual side effects of DEET were....Makes you wonder . |

Location: Rocky Mount N.C. | gemm, What about the PERMETHRIN based fly control sprays? They all contain Petroleum Distillates, most in the 90% range. Guess that would melt something also. My guess is, use what you got and what works for you. I'm not using a fly sheet or mask on my crew cause they will end up tangled up in something or scratched up eyes from trying to rub that mask off. I think that if your using enough deet to melt your tack then you should back off on your application rate, a little bit goes a looooong way! Sponge it on don't spray it in their eyes. |

Location: CA | Yeah, that's what I wondered about the Florida Ext. report. How much would melt material? Yikes! They did say to try it on the seam of anything you're using before you spray/wipe liberally. I don't have an opinion here, just reporting what I read. |

|  I think we originated mosquitoes here in Arkansas,and I live in what must be the worst of it in the Delta rice farming region.I've always found WIPE to be "pretty" effective.It doesn't seem as potent as the old formula I used on my horse when I was a kid.My horses are so grateful for the masks and sheets they never try to get them off.I haven't tried Off,or Deep Woods Off.I've mixed Avon Skin So Soft,apple cider vinegar,citronella ,Dawn dish liquid with good results for a FLY spray,but haven't been able to make any headway on mosquitoes yet short of outfitting them like they are in the jungle! |

Location: South Central OK | Pyranah, the last product you'll ever use. Don't be scared by the price this is THE STUFF we use down here in Texas. It's great on the hair coat, smells good, and WORKS! Stays on the whole day even after a good hard sweaty ride. Here in Texas us show people use it as a grooming spray due to it's oil content. | I reading this with much interest. however, the last time I was in Texas- it was very very hot about 112 degrees, very dry and windy. there wasnt a mosquito or bug or fly to be seen anywhere. there wernt even any birds around that eat bugs. those birds all went somewhere else to find something to eat. Musst be all that good bug spray you all are using down there- you guys just killed them all off ? ha ha!

The list on the bottle includes Mosquitoes but notice it is at the bottom of the list "biting insects that include: Horn Flies, Deer Flies, Stable Flies, Boot Flies, Face Flies, Midges, Mosquitoes and more" I have tried lots of products($$$$$$!!!!!) Repelex Zonk...all pyrethroid based and they don't work well for skeeters!Pyrethroids work good on the flys...but in my experiance not good for skeeters!.....But thanks for the sugestion! |

| Were down here in the South where bugs are plentiful. I try not to use to much of anything. I have one mare that the flies and mosquitos just love. I tried Avon Skin So Soft because I had heard so much about it. Well it worked pretty good. The mosquitos were so bad on her she had welts on her back. The Avon cleared it up pretty quick. I personally think to much of anything spoils them, and that can be aggravating when your trying to ride the trails in the woods. The Avon is a little oily so it does collect dust, but it smells good and it works. It comes in big bottles and you only need a little bit. It's not that expensive and it won't hurt them. You may want to give it a try before spending to much on all sorts of chemical products. |

| Wisconsin has had a major outbreak of Mosquitoes. I just tried Pyranha Wipe N Spray 32oz and it had NO effect on Mosquitoes, NONE. 3-4 of them every square inch. We had to Canter to get back to the trailer. Don't waste your money. I had OFF in a Pump for me and sprayed what I could reach from the saddle and those areas had less Mosquitoes. I do not know if DEET will hurt a horse but works for me. |

Location: Kansas | I've had really good luck with Farnam's (I believe) Mosquito Halt. Works well on flys also. As with anything, I think they build up a resistance to any one product after awhile. |

Location: Southern New Mexico | I have a mare with extremely sensitive skin (It's hell trying to give her a shot!) and I use the parahna fly spray most of the time. The mosquito halts works pretty well, (when we were in S. Tx, haven't had any skeeters here) but I've used the deep woods OFF and find that it works the best on skeeters. The first time I used the OFF was right after a tornado/flooding rain and the mosquitos were horid. This poor mare was getting so fusterated with the mosquitos that she would start attacking the other horses as if it was their fault. I finally ended up putting her winter blanket on her (in July, in S. TX) and spraying her legs/neck and head with the off. She promptly laid down and tucked her legs under her and relaxed. So I sprayed everyone else. Since then when the mosquitos come out I use the off on her and it hasn't irritated her skin. |

Location: Illinois | I've had good luck with Endure. Haven't tried Deet products on my horses, but have thought of it for trail rides only. Like people, I don't think it's a good idea to put Deet on them daily. As for Raid, I've heard of people using it, but really don't like the idea of putting something on my horse when the warning label tells me to wash it off should I get it on me. |
