I have a 2009 Merhow Alumnastar and need to have a ramp added to it as I have a horse with an old hock injury that can't handle the step down to unload anymore. The plan is to have a ramp added. I talked the closest trailer dealer (which is still 1 1/2 hours away) and he told me his shop could add an all aluminum Sundowner ramp to my Merhow. However, it is a bolt on ramp and it will be put on with steel bolts. He assured me he has done hundreds this way and never had a problem. My concern is the steel bolts and the aluminum frame not getting along well. I don't want to do irrepairable damage to the frame of my trailer. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone ever had this done? Are there any procedures that can be done to keep the metals from reacting or is this even a good idea?

Bolts are commonly used to attach to aluminum. Heavy trucks often have aluminum frames and all suspension components are bolted. I'd go with the dealer on this one.

Hi, the use of stainless hardware will set your concerns aside. regular bolts and aluminum have an inter metallic reaction (called galvanic corrosion). goggle to learn more.
