My home brew system is better than any commercially available.  Solar charger, Screw in ground stake (no pounding or pulling) Small or large area as desired. Separate horses or let them mingle.  Cost is less too.

Go to Batteries Plus and get a small battery . Go to Tractor Supply and get about 12 portable fence posts... buy good wire or small braid and set up. Use a gate handle to make walk thru... You will save from the "kits"  that cost a few hundred dollars... and you will have more jolt with the battery that will last longer.

I have been using this one for almost 2 years now. It runs off of 4 d cells or the 12 volt truck or trailer battery. Added some electric rope (poly rope, etc.), pigtail posts and a rubber gate handle. I can make it really big or small, just depends on where we are.
I made a fancy ground rod because I tie my generator to it also. You could use a dog tie down (screw in) but remember that the coating on those might not conduct very well and you won't have a good path for the fence. I you scrape/file the coating off on the end and where the fence ground clips to, it may work ok.

Watching this thread as someone posted about this topic a year or more ago. The person was kind enough to offer a particular bag to purchase to carry the stakes in along with suggesting something to place on the stakes so they wouldn't poke through while transporting. The bag was very reasonably priced as I recall. Hoping the person will see this thread and include that same info. Zareba is running a sale right now and am still interested in purchasing a charger.

A bag from one of those folding chairs would be a perfect size & shape for a bunch of fence poles. Currently, we use a bungie cord to keep them together.

Thanks for the inspiration.

PS... keeping the pointed end up toward the bag opening eliminates poke through...

We pack in a lot, So I often take how ever many fiberglass rods I think I need and a roll or two of Polystring.  I've been know to unroll two 1/4 miles rolls of string, Making a 1/2 mile long perimeter around a mountain meadow and put 19 horses out in it.  I usually touch the edge of the lake or stream so the horses can water themselves and include a copse of trees for shade or shelter if an afternoon thunder bumper blows thru.

I almost always highline at night. I don't trust the horses in the hot wire at night.  I've too often had deer/elk/moose run thru the wire and knock it down or worse drag it off with it sparking the butts of my horses as the deer runs.

I use a portable charger that runs on 4 D cells. and the brands have varied over the years.  So I'm not particular about what brand.

According to Back Country Horseman leave no trace principles.......you got most of it spot on. Except for this one little detail
Watering horses Wet marshy areas, stream banks, ponds and lake edges are very susceptible to trampling, bank erosion and pollution. Water your horses at an established ford or low rocky spot in the bank where little damage will occur. Encourage the hobbled horses to water there as well

A screw in dog tie will work, but I bought a corkscrew ground stake without the swivel ring at Tractor Supply. I use a alligator clip to connect to the charger ground terminal. The screw length makes up for a longer rod, yet is easy to unscrew from the ground. Yanking a driven rod is a such pain.

Here's a link for a tie out at Walmart

What ever you get make sure it is NOT coated or painted. You want bare metal to act as a ground rod.

I have tried both DIY and pre-made kits, but nothing compares to the Roflex electric fence system. At first glance it is expensive until you use it a few times and realize it's worth every penny. In a nutshell, the electric fencing retracts into the posts. Four posts come with the electrical kit. The electrical system is charged at home before your trip. I have camped for a week with the Roflex set up and not run out of charge. The set is made in Germany and there is only 1 distributor in the U.S. It is Slypner located in New Hampshire. Check it out, and save your pennies.
When I was using my DIY system, I purchased a ski bag at Goodwill to store the components and it worked perfectly.

I would recommend using a professional fence system.

It may be a little more expensive for the price, but you will feel better and have more peace of mind. I suggest you buy a multi-piece kit, that way you can make the fence bigger or smaller to your liking. And if you have specific wishes, you can order from a company like https://everlastgates.com/ that does the fencing. Most importantly, make sure you are comfortable taking the fences with you to camping and that they fit in the trunk of your car.
