Location: Virginia | My husband and I are trying to move a wall in our trailer to expand a mid tack. The wall is bolted to the roof with large star bolts. We have the star shaped bit that fits the bolt head, but the entire bolt spins when we try to unscrew it, and the top of the bolt has no groove in it so you cant hold it from the other side to keep it from spinning. do you have to grind it off, and what side of it would you grind off,(I worry about damaging the roof) top or bottom? Im wondering if anyone out there has done this or has experience with this and can suggest something- THANKS! |

Location: Los Angeles, Ca. | Try slipping a putty knife between the bolt head and roof and slowly spin the bolt while applying pressure to the putty knife |

Location: western PA | Another way to remove a loose bolt is to drill a hole in the head and use an easy out bit. If you have enough space and are good using an angle grinder, larger bolt heads can be scored with the vertical cut of a thin cut off wheel, making a slot for a common screw driver tip. However, this should be effected with caution, any mistakes and the roofing material can be damaged. |
