I am putting a hay rack on my roof to carry water. I don't plan to actually put hay or other equipment on it. I'm wondering if its necessary to also get a ladder. I was hoping to save that expense by just using a household ladder to climb on the roof when I fill the tanks. Is that a dumb idea?

Thanks

I would be more concerned about the water in the baking sun. Not sure if that would cause bacteria or other growth.

I have a water tank in my hay rack. Love it. If you keep it clean and sterilize it like you do the other water tank you will be fine. We typically use the hay rack tank for the horses as it does get warmer in the sun and the horses prefer water that is not real cold.
As far as the ladder is concerned, I would get it. Not sure you are going to save all that much money by eliminating it. It is easier to work on the water tank that way as well. Will hurt resale value if you don't have one.

You do not need a full ladder. Some trailers have the little individual flip down foot steps to climb up. Unless you are going to pack your ladder along on trips, I'd have some way to get up on top while on the road in case you needed to work on the tanks etc.

I can't climb a ladder (I'm shy one whole right leg) but if I could this is the one that would be on my equipment.... Think safety first!!

So how much do those ladders cost? Mr. Truck does not have a price. Looks nice though. Might want to get one of those in the future.

Here's a link to the web site:

They say each installation is custom built, and only that the ladders are "affordable". Check with the dealers for pricing.
