Some of us worry about not having enough truck when we are just fine. Others, seem oblivious to outright danger. I just saw a gal load four horses in a trailer and drive off pulling it with a little Tacoma truck! On icy winter roads! I worry about my F250 being enough truck for my Sundowner 2 horse trailer..... I just don't get how someone could not realize how dangerous it is for man and beast to pull such a heavy load with a mini truck!

One place I ride regularly has a Dodge Durango in the lot pulling a 4 horse bumper pull. I just shake my head and ask God to please not let me on the road when "those people" are! You know what they say about God protecting fools and children!

I hear ya. How on earth could a Dodge Durango or a Toyota Tacoma pulling a four horse bumper pull possibly stop in a hurry if the had too? Also, what happens if they are going up a hill with not enough power? Would the trailer start pulling them backwards? Yep these folks are definitely "God's lesser gifted children".

I helped a guy pull his trailer out one day, he had a 3 horse chaparral with LQ pulling it with a 1500 Chevy 2WD, hit a steep hill on wet pavement and he broke traction and went backwards with no control, and thank goodness he was stopped by a tree from going over the bank.

I really don't want to have to get a special license to pull my horse trailer but stupid people like that sure do help those who make the argument that we need them.

While camping in Arkansas we saw a guy pull into camp with a Toyota Tocomma pulling a bumper pull camper with a two horse trailer behind that. He had a horse in one stall and a motorcycle in the other. He claimed it did fine but we all had other thoughts!

I pull a 4 horse, trails west, 9' shortwall. I pull it with a 3500 chevy diesel single cab, single rear wheel. I regularly cruise down IH10 to El Paso at about 87mph up to 92mph. Four horses, water, loaded for a week long trip. It pulls like a dream.

I guess it really depends how much weight is on the bed of the truck and the trucks towing capacity.

Someone pulling with a toyota or a durango that is not fully loaded is probably fine. At least they are out there doing it.

Where is the DISLIKE button when you need it???I would hate being on the roads with people who think it is fine to be under trucked and over weight and hate it even worse with ones like the person who posted just above braggin' about pulling horses at 87 to 92 mph!... My opinion people like this sure do not need to haul animals!

I would like to know what brand/make/kind of truck and trailer tire Mr. Dripping Springs, Texas is running at 92 mph?

Think I'm about to get educated...

First day on the forums and I'm already making friends.

Trailer tire: Cooper Discover H/T LT235/85 16

Truck tire: Michelin LTX AT2 LT 265/70 R18

I have made this trip out to New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Moab, El Paso at least 20 times out and back. I drive most of the time at 86mph. Would any of you run 70mph if that was the speed limit? Have you ever been out to west Texas say from Junction, Tx to El Paso, Tx. Once you get into AZ the speed limit is 75mph. Would you go 75mph? Ok so the speed limit on IH10 is 80mph, I just round up because the DPS really aren't looking at you unless your going 90mph or above.

Like my wife says to me "don't be a gurmudgeon".

Um... Unless my calculations are way out then 92 mph converts to 148kph. I may not be the most seasoned horse hauler on this forum, however, in my professional life and education I am qualified to discuss trauma(human). I can assure you with 100 percent certainty that hauling a loaded four horse trailer and going at that speed that your chance of survival in the event of a motor vehicle collision is absolutely zero. The question really is how many other unfortunate drivers/passengers of nearby motorists you will take with you. While I am no vet,I dare say that your horses would also perish in any accident involving the high speed you boast of traveling. For heaven's sake please slow down! For your safety, your passengers, your horses, and other motorists. SPEED KILLS!

Yes the speed limit is much higher out in west Texas. I have driven it many times. The problem is that the tires on a horse trailer are not rated to go that fast especially when hauling weight. Eventually you will have one blow going 90+ mph and we will not hear you discuss it on this forum, you will be dead. You need to haul at the rated speed for your equipment. ALL your equipment. That includes the tires. Just because your truck can get the rig up to that speed does not mean you should. I pull with an F350 dually. It will pull my 38ft horse trailer at 90+ if I wanted. It is just not safe.

Partner, just let the California CHP catch you going that fast, and I can GAYRONTEE you will be put in the jail!! Yeah, the speed limit for lets say I-15 from Barstow to Vegas is 75MPH. If you are towing...and no matter who, or what you are towing, if you are exceeding about 62 with a trailer, you will be stopped, ticketed, and perhaps arrested. I can only imagine the stress on the tires when the ambient temperature is about 112*F, and you have one tire that is about 3-5 LBS under full.....I have driven this road many times, have pulled 22,000 lbs with my 3500, and doing about 62, have never had a problem. By the way...the speed limit in California is 55MPH if you are towing, as it is for trucks. ( No one drives exactly 55,but to exceed it by much is asking for a visit to the calaboose)

If one trailer tire fails at 90 mph...depending on your total trailer weights...the second one on that same side will fail rather rapidly...and unless you are real lucky at that moment...you are going to be in the wreck of your life and your horses' lives...:(

Common sense and horse sense are alive and well... unfortunately (especially in the case of rfrank!) the HORSES seem to have all of it! I hope I'm never on the highway when he is!!! And, by the way, the correct word is
"curmudgeon" not "gurmudgeon". The definition of curmudgeon is: "an ill-tempered person full of resentment and stubborn notions." Perhaps this explains your crazy idea of "safe" driving speeds. I hope the good Lord watches over your horses... and the rest of us that happen to be on the road when you are!

Paul, I've been here for quite a while reading and learning. This forum is no different then the millions of other forums on the internet, there are members that like to think that this forum is their bully pulpit and their opinion is the only one that counts. Then there's those members who rarely post but absorb every bit of information they can find. Then there are members that have to post just to hear themselves talk and most of what they post serves just that purpose.

Last time I checked, you don't own nor run this website, which makes you no more important then any other member. I can tell by your posts that you really think a lot of yourself and your self importance. I just have a much different opinion towards you.

I'll check back when I have a couple of thousand more posts and maybe I can be a Big Shot like you.

Unlike you, Paul has spent years offering help, continual support and good will. His vast knowledge and resources, have constantly improved the skills of our forum members. His prominence in our forum is manifested by his ability to HELP others, and his willingness to do so unselfishly for many years.

With your unabashed attitude, you will never become a "Big Shot" for any reason, other than denigrating other people. You can only become important when you are able to help people, and that's not accomplished by ridicule. Grow up before you check back. You're giving the Irish a bad name.

I can not believe I have been away for a few days and this is just getting better....lmaoBack to the speed demon, my 07 Dodge Ram 3500 c/c truck with a CM HAULER bed (8800lbs) has tons of extras in the performance side of things and has the speed limiter raised to 120 and this truck will do every bit of it with easy. But I no way in hell will do it with a trailer much less a horse trailer loaded with horses. I like my equipment and horses much better than that!!! And the reason I know about the 120 mph is I wanted to check it out after I installed all of my toys, plus I was on a long stretch of highway in Kansas late in the afternoon with NO traffic and only about a mile then back to normal again....

Just because a truck is supposed to be rated to do something (such as a 1 ton truck pulling a load at excessive speed, or a smaller Tacoma truck towing a horse large trailer that may be at what the manufacturer says it is rated to tow) does not mean it is safe. While the new guy took a rather odd approach, I think that may be his point. How often do we hear someone say "My 1/2 ton pulls JUST FINE", when others cringe at the thought of their large trailer heading down the road behind it? Its easier to see the error of an excessive speed, but some don't always see the error in not enough truck for the load until things go wrong.

Goz, please refrain from name calling. It not very becoming of you. I don't want to see this fine informative forum to turn into what so many other Internet forums turn into. Thanks
Because you've been here so often...
Paul, I've been here for quite a while reading and learning. This forum is no different then the millions of other forums on the internet, there are members that like to think that this forum is their bully pulpit and their opinion is the only one that counts. Then there's those members who rarely post but absorb every bit of information they can find. Then there are members that have to post just to hear themselves talk and most of what they post serves just that purpose.Last time I checked, you don't own nor run this website, which makes you no more important then any other member. I can tell by your posts that you really think a lot of yourself and your self importance. I just have a much different opinion towards you.I'll check back when I have a couple of thousand more posts and maybe I can be a Big Shot like you. 12 12 12
Well...if your couple of posts comprise what you've learned here...then we've failed you miserably...

I have respect for you Irish Wake, for owning up to a mistake and apologizing. Paul and Gard are both exceptionally knowledgable contributors to this forum and I learn so much from both of them. If only rfrank had as much class as you and just apologized but I guess that just isn't the case.Happy Trails!

first Gard and Paul do not let him get to you, I still dont get it were dose it say he is 12 ?? Hogtownboos what was it like to go that fast :)
Actually a lot smoother than driving 80mph... But still a 1 time deal just to see if the added parts was up to par, plus never hurts to open one up and blow it out ever once in a while........ Still would sure NEVER try it with a trailer, much less a horse trailer loaded!
