Any suggestions, tips or tricks to safe winter travel with horses? Should you use blankets during travel? Have roof vents open but not side windows? Ideas for the truck?

I don't think this has a single answer. There are so many variables that come in to play- temps, speed traveled, openness of trailer, length of travel, condition of animals, just to name a few. I think this is a judgment call

I live in Alberta where we have very cold winters for the majority of the year. I don't open roof vents or side windows when hauling as it is just too darn cold. There is enough fresh air that comes in the trailer as is. Besides, heat rises so if you open the roof vents it will be really cold in the trailer. I put shavings down in the trailer so if the horses pee they don't slip ona frozen puddle in the trailer. I always blanket them in the trailer in the winter also. I also like to have lots of shavings in the trailer so that if it is slippery outside of the trailer when you are loading or unloading I can grab some shavings for traction.
