We are looking at a 2003 steel frame horse trailer but not sure what is acceptable rust and what is not. My husband took a key and poked at the ares he could. Seemed strong and only needs to have cleaned then painted but concerned about the under carriage where we could not get to. Photos attached for any advise. Thanks so much.

Your photos indicate the typical condition for a steel trailer as found in my part of the rust belt areas. The framework photos indicated heavy surface rust, but not any significant structural damage. The proper way to repair the rust, would be to have the rusted areas media blasted, then coated with a rust converter, having an epoxy primed coating added, and finishing with a chassis paint.

Gard is correct. I have an 04 Steel trailer and its not quiet that bad but I've seen alot worse. Looks OK IMHO. Nothing that a little work cant fix.

Thank you so much. We really like this trailer but just wanted to check since we have not purchased one before. With a little elbow grease, we will clean then paint.

As long as you can't poke holes through it with your finger...
