Both of my trailers are about 10 years old and have tires that have been replaced. The VIN plate shows the tires should be inflated to 80 psi, the tires show that the max pressure is 80 psi. My vehicles generally show that the tires should be inflated to about 75% of max, for instance my car tires say max pressure of 51 psi and the sticker inside the door says to inflate to 32 psi. How should I determine the proper pressure for my trailer tires?

Agreed, inflate to max tire pressure for trailer. Make sure your tires are cold. They should not have been run for several hours. Air will heat when the tires rotate and pull, they are designed to allow for that when inflated to max. If the tires are warm and you check the pressure it can appear they are at the proper setting but are actually running low pressure for your tires. That makes them run hotter and can cause failure especially when hauling weight.
