Hi! I am new and would appreciate some advice. I have spent some time looking and have found a trailer which will fit my horse, my tow vehicle, and my budget, but I am not sure how to determine if it is safe and sound and if it is a good deal or if I could maybe get something better for the money.

I am looking at a 1993 GN 2h slant load aluminum 4 Star trailer with a small unfinished DR. It has a permanent tack in the rear with saddle racks and blanket bars, bus windows curb side, drop downs head side, nice rubber mats and pads in the horse area. They are asking $8900.

I lifted the mats at the rear of the stalls and the floor was very clean where the wall meets the floor, no discoloration. Where a male would urinate in the front stall there was a slightly discolored area - sort of copper colored, but it was clean and smooth and shiny and I could not see any pitting or holes. (There was water under the mats like the floor had been recently washed.) I could not pull the mats up completely by myself, but can do that when I go back tomorrow.

The exterior of the trailer is slightly discolored and dull (compared to the shiny new ones next to it), but the salesman says it will clean right up with an acid wash. The GN stand and coupler had some rust and one of the pin latches on the back door had rust. Otherwise, I could not find any rust or oxidation anywhere, including a cursory look under the trailer. The windows and doors all appear to work smoothly.

It is missing the spare tire and 2 hub caps, but the tires appear to have pretty good tread. They are advertised as being new in the last year. I noticed the brake controller cable is also new, but I had no way to check the lights or brakes.

So, does this potentially seem like a good deal for a 20 year old 4 Star, or would the price or age make you walk away? What would you inspect or do or ask to make sure an old trailer like this is safe and sound?

I appreciate any help and advice anyone can give. Thanks!

I wouldn't be worried as much about quality or safety on this trailer unless it had been wrecked because 4 Stars, especially of that era, are very well built. The price seems a little high in my opinion. If you didn't have to do ANYTHING at all to it, it would still seem high. But, you need to get a spare and a few other minor things, so i would negotiate appropriately!

Many of the older 4 Stars had a "milled" finish of the exterior panels. They were a duller finish than the trailers being produced today. An acid wash will clean them, but not make them as shiny as you might expect. The exterior skin can be mechanically polished to higher reflectivity, but it is labour intensive.

Because of the 4 Star's sheet flooring, an aged trailer will have divots in the flooring. Where the horses stand, the metal will stretch and result in a small pocket allowing fluids to collect and stand. When the mats are installed, the trapped fluids cannot evaporate or migrate, and these areas become a breeding ground for corrosion.

The best fix is to pull the mats and rinse the flooring. When standing water is realised in certain areas, drill a 1/4" drain hole in each puddle, allowing the water to drain. Depending upon the severity of the depressions, you may need four holes per stall, or a little as one.

I would seriously consider an acid washing of the flooring, to ensure any corrosion issues are addressed. Following up with a bed liner material would greatly reduce any further maintenance issues.

Check the spring latches on the stall dividers for wear. 4 Star used a spring loaded pin that fits into an orifice let into the side wall panel. A stainless patch is fastened by blind rivets to reduce wear on the aluminum structure. Both the divider and the side structure are subject to wear, from the bolt like latch on the divider, to the hole for the pin. As they elongate, the pin can bend, the divider, snubbed by a piece of rubber can begin to rattle, the bolt like latch handle can rip out of the divider. These items are difficult to repair, by replacing sheet metal and the mechanism.

Check all the window and door latches for integrity and operation. 4 Star uses heavy duty components and usually there will be no need for any maintenance, other than an occasional squirt of lubrication. The various hold backs are rived to the body instead of being screwed into place. This makes their replacements a little more difficult.

On that year trailer, unless the previous owner has done so, you will need to replace the brake and wheel bearing assemblies. This will cost several hundred dollars, but then they will not need to be again replaced, for probably as long as you own the trailer.

A new replacement trailer will cost in the range of ~$24K, depending upon what options you specify. $8900 for a twenty year old trailer is a bit high, especially if it needs an acid wash, tires, brakes, bearings, a new plug and maybe some lights. A spare tire and wheel can cost a couple hundred dollars, hubs caps are inexpensive, SIMMs more so. You may end up putting $500 - $1500 into the trailer after purchase, to upgrade and ensure reliability. Once that is done, you will not need or anticipate any major expense for many years.

I would offer $7500 and settle on about $8000 as a maximum. If the mechanicals are done, the tires are good and a spare can be furnished, maybe another $500 max. for a total of $8500.

Thank you all so much for your help. I went to look at the trailer again well armed with all your advice, and it served me very well.

Almost everything that Gard told me to check turned out to be a problem on this trailer, plus a lot of other problems surfaced. With the mats out the floor was indeed shiny and clean, but was also dented and warped and shifted and popped in multiple places when you stepped down. Underneath there was a support that was bent and sheared completely away from the frame. The brake conduit and wiring was dragging on the ground near one of the tires and in the light of day the tires were in terrible shape and all needed replaced. Multiple lights were out, we couldn't open one of the drop down windows that was locked shut, and the list got longer and longer the more we looked.

The dealer was unwilling to negotiate below $8500 or perform repairs or throw in a spare or do much of anything except refer me to a welder and trailer shop. I got the distinct impression that she felt someone else will walk in and buy this 20 year old trailer without being so "picky." And maybe they will. As for me, for that price, I will keep looking.

Thank you so much for helping out. You guys are awesome.

It sounds like you did the right thing ksuwildcat93. There are many other trailers out there in better shape for less money. Keep checking here frequently and you'd be surprised what bargains can be found. Just be prepared to act quickly because the good ones do not take long to sell!
