I'm in the market for a new (as in 'not used') trailer and haven't bought one since 2000. Has anyone purchased a new trailer recently who could give me an idea of how much of a discount off of asking/list price would be reasonable for dealer and me. I'm looking at spending around $20,000. Thanks in advance.

I read 10-15% but am not a negotiator, so can't say for sure. I pretty much would either like the price and buy it or walk. Didn't say that's right, just said that I don't like the game playing part of buying stuff.

That's tough to answer, Since every mfg could have a different margin.  And unlike cars and trucks, there is not a window price sheet.  A dealer can make up any pricing they want and post it on the trailer. If you don't comparison shop, you really are at the mercy of the dealer.

Your best bet is get online and have some idea of what a similar trailer is selling for,  Even if it is last years used trailer.  At least when a dealer tells you $20,000 is a deal. and You know that a 1 year old trailer sells for $18,000, You can assume it is in line.

I am in the process of buying a new to me trailer (used). I did price new ones like I wanted from three different makers. After I picked myself up out of the dirt from sticker shock, I started asking for discounts, none where fort coming. The answers I got were to start removing features to bring the price down. Maybe I'm just not good at haggling. I had to go with a 5 year old trailer to get the features I wanted in the price range I could afford, which was more than I wanted to spend. Even used trailers have gotten painfully expensive.

Thanks for the comments. I'll be calling the dealer this a.m. to see what he says. I'm lucky in that there are 2 dealers w/ same trailer equidistant from me so maybe I can get them in a 'bidding' war for my business.

Do some research online and compare prices at different dealers. Then don't be afraid to make an offer. I did, was told it was an insult and the next day, I got a phone call and they took it! Thousands less than the original asking price I might add. It helps to buy a new 2011 or 2012 that has been sitting on the lot!

Trade shows and stock shows are good places to get deals. Wait until the end of the show and buy one before they have to haul it home. Can save a ton. Also, if you are looking new, and if you are not in a big hurry, order what you want. We saved thousands by ordering in November and getting the trailer in February. We were just going to store it all winter anyway. The dealer is just brokering the deal. They don't have to pay to have it on their lot, interest on any loans and minimal insurance. It arrived on their lot Friday night and we picked up Saturday morning.
It also allows you to get exactly what you want not what they ordered for their lot. A case in point, my wife does not like mangers for long hauls, horses can't drop their heads. We ordered it without along with several other custom things. Worked out great for us.
