If the trailer is smooth skinned (usually white) and says Valuelite for the model; its aluminum skinned/steel framed. If it says Sunlite with a three digit number after the word Sunlite, it's all aluminum. It could be an all steel trailer also, as Sundowner was building the last of the steel models in '98. Those models were a name; such as Horizon. PM me is you need more info.

The Valuelite issue is a matter of the powder coat paint system. The coating allows moisture to get under the coating. Not a good thing but I have a 2000 Valuelite. It is shedded and I keep it cleaned out of manure & wash the urine out regularly. I don't use it on salted roads or on the coast. Horse trailers are destroyed by corrosion. Most corrosion is caused by the horses and salt.

So if I am looking at buying a 2011 Sportman, should I be concerned? It says it is an all aluminum trailer, was the rust/falling apart issue just in aluminum/steel trailers?

No concern. The new Sportman has aluminum structure throughout (except for steel tongue & axle box as do most trailers). The problem areas of the older trailers have been addressed.
