There is a group on Facebook that has numerous snowbirds posting their photos of riding in the Arizona area.  Doesn't do much for you east coast snowbirds. But you could ask the same question and maybe learn something about their lifestyle.

http://www.facebook.com/groups/HorseTrailsAcrossAmerica/

I suspect this should be in the Camp and trail section of the forum vs the trailer section.

I was wondering if any on here could help settle a debt?  In the future I would love to spend part of the winter in Arizona my husband is the opinion that our trailer would be to small to spend any length of time in I disagree. It is only a 8ft.s.w. but it is 8ft.wide. I believe that we would be out more than in,as we are now when we camp. Has anyone on here ever camped in this size of trailer for that long?

Thanks.

A lot of the ropers spend the winters out here in AZ and live in their big LQs. There are many 'snowbirds' out here as well...they park at one of the many 'horse friendly' campgrounds and ride and relax. I know some that rent homes for the winters and travel about.

Hubby and I spent a month at Apache Junction in our 4' shortwall LQ Jan '05. We had actually planned on staying longer, but when we moved on down to the campground at Tucson we opted to leave after a few days. Campground left a lot to be desired. We've done a lot of long distance trips, and we are so glad to be where we're at, that we don't mind the cramped quarters since we're mainly outdoors. I will admit that we've talked about snowbirding again, but if/when we do, we'll rent a place if we can stable the horse where we did back then. Heading to TX in March for 2 weeks and can't wait. Might be borrowing a horse, but we're going no matter what.

suz1023 - I would recommend you pick up a magazine called "The trail rider". In this magazine there is a couple who travel the usa and write about their travel. The magazine also has a "where-to-ride" section listing every state. I'm sure there are ton's of other places to stay and ride but this would be a good start.

Your biggest problem in LONG camping periods will be hauling adequate supplies for your horses...

Don't worry about going off topic.  We've had many OT threads before.  I do suggest you repost in this section or camping depending on your need.  The original heading gets people interested.  So an OT question doesn't get as many replies to your ?.

As for Paul's comment.  I've found that local farm / feed stores sell hay or know who in the area will sell horse quality bales.  The horse camp ground you're staying at will know the local suppliers too.  A couple of hay bales from home to transition your horse to local hay, transition your horse to a national brand of feed at home (I'm thinking of something like Purina that's availble everywhere)and you'll be fixed for how ever long you wish.

There are several state parks in Texas that have equine camping with nice pens.  Some have hookups, some are primative.  Lots of northerners come down and camp with their horses.  We just got back from a Rv park in Bandera where you can have your horses in pens close to your trailer.  There were about 12 people there from up north spending the winter there.

An investment in portable corrals will also open up many places to camp and ride. Many places that accept horses are state owned here in Calif., so only can occupy a site for a maximum of 14 days, and must leave for I think 14 days. We usually go for a week at a time, and so can use the portables and camp primitive, and since we have so much BLM land here, it is always someplace new to see.

When we lived in MD, some of us would head out the end of Jan and go to Live Oak Fl's Suwanne River Music Park, then Ocala, then stop in Ga @Hard Labor State Park, Orangeburd, SC,then Uwharrie in  NC, then mt Rogers, VA before heading home. We'd be gone about a month , meet up with friends in those areas, cook, ride, sight see & shop!

Four more years and I'll be hauling south with my horses too. I'm counting down every cold winter month until I never have to see it again. Year round riding, here I come!

I am an northeastern snowbird (Canada) with three horses. This is our 4th winter in central Florida. We rented first year and bought 2 years ago. In our area there are half a dozen large parks with trails and lots of people with horses. We have direct access to 26,000 acres. Rentals are a possibility but hard to find with horses but there are many places boarding horses and it is a lot cheaper here than in the north. If you have a live in rig there I'm sure you can easily find someone who needs the income and would let you park and board your horses. It has been the best thing we have ever done.

Texas has a number of State Parks with horse camping facilities and lots of miles of trails. The three I have been to are Nails Creek State Park, Lake Sommerville, Sommerville, Tx.; Caprock Canyon State Park & Trailway, Quitaque pronounced (kitty-kay), Tx; and Hill Country State Natural Area, Bandera, Tx. They all have horse pens in some areas but only Sommerville has campgrounds with hot showers and toilets. All of the areas have campgrounds with RV hook ups. We have enjoyed them all. At Lake Sommerville there is a location that you can ride you horse INTO the lake. Very fun on a hot day. The website is www.tpwd.state.tx.us/stateparks

suz1023 - South! LOL! California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas is the current plan. I can't wait, think about it every day. We want to move around and explore a bit, but I also wouldn't be opposed to finding a great camping location where the locals do some penning or cowhorse. My husband can ride, but doesn't, but has decided that he's going to start this year so that we can put this plan in action. I think he's also worried he'll get left out of the trips if he doesn't start, as last spring he was left at home while I went riding in Spain. Now THAT was a vacation!
