Ive been washing my trailer a couple of times a year at a car wash in the tall motor home bay. I always completely strip the shavings (and everything else) in the trailer before going to the wash. I'm always careful to hose out the wash and leave it cleaner than I found it. In the middle of washing today the owner comes up and tells me that it is "illegal to wash a horse trailer in the car wash. It is unsanitary. Stop what you are doing and get out"I was pretty much done, closed up the trailer, rinsed off the floor of the wash with the remaining time and left. There are no signs that say No Horse Trailers. The guy was pretty blunt (rude, actually); no "hello" of any kind; just it's illegal, it's unsanitary and get out.Hey, it's his place and if he doesn't want horse trailers there it's surely his call but is there any legitimacy to the It's illegal" remark?

Off the top of my head it may be against a city ( county, township etc) code for horse manure to get into the storm drains. That would be the only difference between motor homes, large trucks and horse trailers ( livestock also counts) Too abd he was so rude..there are always nicer ways to get your message across.

I've seen signs by owners of car washes that they do not want stock trailers. But never heard of a city ordinance . I think he was having a bad day....

Look into a power washer. I bought a little electric one for $99 at Sears and it got the interior and the rubber mats really clean. Well, the whole trailer. How did I ever do without a power washer?

I use my hose at home with a high pressure nozzle, with pinesol and a broom for the inside.

Car soap and an extended scrubby brush thing for the outside.

No quarters.  No rude jerks.

Perhaps a carwash place that welcomes Semi trucks will accept you?

What has probably happened is that while I'm sure YOU cleaned up after yourself, there's plenty of other jerks that probably saw you there and thought it was a good idea.  They came, they washed, they left the place a pigpen and you lost your right.  ALL banned for the evils of others. Sucks but yeah ... it happens.

He COULD Have been less of a jerk about it though.

you're right.I am fortunate that I live out "in the sticks" and no neighbors complain about what I'm washing around here. But,this is the way to get around the "it's illegal, get out" comments.Or,perhaps you might try looking at another car wash and contacting the owner first and explaining your carefulness.I'm sure he wouldn't mind collecting the quarters from you after he sees you are truthful about your wash and cleanup job.

My husband owns car washes and it is banned to wash feces down the city sewer. The city can withdraw your ability to buy water if you are caught breaking these rules. Never mind you have no control over what people wash. Some cities (like ours) are worse than others. He probably could have been more diplomatic, but dealing with people day in and day out often causes you to get more blunt.

That was pretty much my thought too, though you would think they would post signs if they really have an issue with that. After all, most of those places don't have attendants on duty 24 hours a day.

Of course a city can have such a ordinance. They have lots of them and most residents have no idea what half of them are. In any case- perhaps a call to the owner/manager might be in order to clarify the situation or just do it yourself at home...

An indication of 'YES' to livestock trailers states that the truck wash will clean the exterior of the trailer only. It should not be implied that they will clean the interior of the trailer.

I too was once asked to leave a car wash. After completely foaming the engine bay of my car, and before I could flush it out, an irate person demanded that I immediately leave.

By the time I got home, the soap had dried and caked, making a simple flushing impossible to remove the remaining soap residue. It took several cans of engine cleaner, some brushing and a lot of water to complete the wash.

Like CRG, I now do everything I can at home. Power washers are a great tool for many jobs.

I too was "checked" on one day while washing my trailer out. My guy was a little nicer though and just wanted to make sure there was no shavings, hay and manure. He was ok when he saw all that I was doing was washing out dry urine stains and dust.

In some localities in the West, there are specific county or city ordinances against washing horse trailers in car washes.

good idea and better hurry before they pass some stupid intrusive other law that prevents you from washing things on your own property without clearing with your locals,EPA,etc.

Trust me it is a bigger pain for the owners of the car washes than the customers. They test the contents of the pits and can fine or shut you down. We have to fill out tons of paper work every year for a permit. A lot of it depends on the size of FU department in your particular city.

1That's what I'm saying."Test the contents of the pits" oh BROTHER.What NEXT??? Don't they have anything better to do,or put their budget to better use? Geeze! Glad I live in the COUNTRY where I can pour out a skillet of grease at the end of the yard or throw out some scraps without filling out some forms or paying a permit, and I'm enjoying that while I can, trust me!

Ordinance or no ordinance, many, if not most, car washes, even the do it yourself ones, recycle the water used. In which, those that are less considerate then you, besides clogging drains can likely clog the water filters with shavings and manure. I don't think they want to to just make a few peoples lives difficult, but at the same time, a few people shouldn't go out of their way to make theirs more difficult. Sadly, much as you have been considerate, so many more likely were not. I've seen signs at most washes asking people not to wash excessively muddy vehicles for much the same reason. That and most fiberglass and aluminum trailers probably shouldn't be washed at car washes because of the chemicals used.

Most car washes have some sort of sediment screen that filters out the excess materials from going into the sewer system.  The car wash owners have to literial Shovel Out this screens of waste that won't flow with the water.

When somebody washes off a really muddy truck, the bed of a pick up that has left over hay, or wash out the interior of a horse trailer, that just means extra work for them to have to remove that material from their system.

If you compare how much dirt might possibly come from a dusty car, vs what comes from a muddy truck that has been out in a very gooey field or the manure and saw dust from a trailer, you are probably comparing the effort for 1000 or 10,000 dusty cars to 1 single truck wash. Where the car wash owner might have to clean his filters once ever 3 months he now has to clean them the next day.

I do occassional use the car wash to clean my horse trailer. But usually just the outside.  At home, I take the garden hose and wash out the horse manure/urine after sweeping out the shavings. It's just easier to pull the mats, sweep everything out and drag a long hose into the trailer than to try and do any of that at a car wash.

Now I have a friend who lives in a desert area where water is scarce. They have a 400 gallon cistern for their home and have to haul water daily from a water source in town. He takes his horses to the car wash to clean them up vs uses any of his water at home.
