As I look at horse trailers (fantasizing mostly) and the different axle ratings it occurred to me to ask...if I was buying a trailer with the idea of adding LQ at a later date, what should I look for as far as axle ratings (5k, 7.5k?) and is there any extra bracing underneath that is/would be necessary?

this would depend on what size trailer , LQ , horses , and options .most trailers come with axles made for the weight of the trailer plus gear . if ordering a trailer ask about the x-tra weight .figure on around 350 to 450 lbs per ft. for the LQ . Hope this helps .

It does, thanks. Thinking 2-3 horses, 4-5 ft. shortwall, shower/toilet/sink/fridge. Don't care a thing about cooking so no stove.
