wow, amazing story.  30 years ago a barn burnt my mare was outside at the time but one of the horses had a run on her stall that mare kept going back into the burning barn... she was hauled to a horse hospital but eventually died from burns and lung complications.  The mare's run was on the upwind side of the fire and she still kept going back into the stall.  Some people think if you open the stall they should run out - most wont.  There wasn't a gate to get her out of her run so it took a while to cut the fence --- lesson here... outside runs  are great but how many have an outside openings?
