Hi All,
. I am new here and been reading/researching the great info here.
I would love to upgrade to a LQ trailer. Have been hauling a 2hrs and have a small pop up camper. As I age I find I would love to be a bit more comfy!
I am not sure if my truck will haul that big of a trailer, can you help me figure it out???
Here's the specks on my truck: 2005 2500 HD dodge diesel Quad cab, 6 foot bed, 5.9 TD, 4 speed auto, 4 x 4, gvwr 9000, rear ax 6000, front ax 5200.
I bought it new in 05 and only have 24,000 miles on it (only use it to haul horses) so you can see I won't be doing tons of traveling. Mostly I trailer up the local mts...rough dirt roads, some pretty steep, to camp. A little hwy travel, as I occasionally travel further.
So, what weight could I haul? The ram specs I found online said 13000 tow weight. If that the case, Who makes good lightweight, comfortable LQ trailers. I am not looking to spend a fortune, so anything over 30,000 is most likely out of my range. Less of course would be great. Used is okay.
Any info you can share is greatly appreciated!

I had an 06 Ram 2500 long bed regular cab diesel 4x4 and pulled a Merhow 8' shortwall lq with slide out, 3 horse and fully loaded with stuff and 3 horses, the truck hardly knew the trailer was behind it.

So I think you will be able to pull a very nice lq trailer. Also you will find more 3 horse trailers than 2 horse, the resale is better on a 3, and the extra space always comes in handy if you are only taking 1 or 2 horses.

Happy shopping!

Resale will be more determined by make and condition than 2 or 3 horse. You can take that extra space of three horse and add more LQ or midtack and still be within your towing weight if you will always haull one or two. 8 foot wide is more roomy for LQ.

We have had both two and three horse LQs. While each has benefits, I wanted more living space so opted for two horse with hay rack. If I were to change one thing I would like midtack to store more clothes.

Finding two horse LQ will harder than three though, but you will have greater selection to chose from on a three horse.16 50

We regularly haul two horses and own three horse capacity trailers. As was previously stated, the extra stall is welcomed for additional storage capacity, and the space can be reconfigured for several interior options. And if someone gets in a jamb, you have the additional capacity to help out with a ride.

The additional weight and length of the three horse over the two is relatively negligable, and won't hinder your driving styles much at all, particularly if the axles are placed under the center stall on the three horse trailer. Often, the extra stall adds ~300# to the weight of the trailer, depending on its width.

It's easier to buy and sell a three horse trailer. There are many available for sale, and because they are desirable, quite convenient to sell.

You can purchase an aluminum 3H SL trailer with a weekender LQ that weighs ~5800#. With two horses and some equippment, you'll be well under your towing limits.

Gard your funny.. "1403 3H LQ trailers for sale"  1400 of them have couches, 2 have dented stainless fronts (that are not disclosed until you ask)  and one maybe one has what your looking for in options...

Just kidding but seriously yes lots of LQs (we have looked at them all)  But which ONE suits your needs?

We have been looking to increase our LQ living area.  It is not as easy as one thinks to find the perfect match.

Good luck!

But there are only 12 2H LQ trailers that have a midtack for extra storage. I would opt for a three horse just because there are more available and a place to carry hay, tables, chairs, etc is very welcome. And I don't want to have to climb on top of my trailer to get to this stuff..... getting too old for that!

Great point!

What use does the hay rack really offer.  I tried to climb up one of those the other day and frankly could not see myself doing it with anything in my hands, especially a bale of hay..

Aren't they a wind drag too?

I would place an extra water tank or a generator up there but certainly not hay and or camping gear.

To each threre own. For every negative comment there is a positive. I use Front end loader or back trailer up to hay loft to load hay. We use bags to keep hay dry and that makes taking down fairly easy.... just toss a bag down. No issue. Owned two horse LQ for seven years..it works for us.And we usually see five to six LQs similar to our set up at large rides. Always have folks ask to look at our set up on EVERY organized ride we atttend.Ive sold two 2 horse trailers with zero problems and either broke even or made money. Even had a 2 Horse LQ stolen! In the same token easily sold 3 horse LQ.... it al came down to great condition and maintenance of trailer. AND quality of LQ. And as I stated before selection is greater for 3 horse, but it is not the only option.Drag is so minimal on hay rack that it doesn't factor in to mileage. So to the original poster, if you only need a two horse and can find one that suits you, do not be concerned with resale. Evaluate if it has the options and layout that suit you.

After purchasing our trailer with a hay rack, we tried it out. Loading it with the tractor was fairly easy. Climbing to and around the rack for us old folks was more difficult. We had enclosed each bale in a garbage bag, so the labours of insertion and extraction of the hay bales had to be added to the task.

After the show, we decided to replace the one unused bale back on top. It was then that we realised, we were physically incapable of lifting a square bale onto the roof, whilst climbing the ladder.

We cleaned out a space in the unused front stall and threw the bale on the floor. This since has become the hay's regular storage area, along with buckets, feed and all the larger necessary traveling items.

The rack and any roof additions causes parasitic drag. Antennas, AC units, hay racks, even open vents cause a loss in mileage. Three hay bales on our trailer resulted in a measured 1 1/2 mpg increase at 70 MPH. An empty rack will not cause as much drag, but it will cause increased wind resistance.

The only reason I haven't cut ours off, is the protection it affords from the snow falling off the barn roof onto the trailer. The third stall is much more valuable, user friendly, and holds a great many more materials in a weather proof environment. It is also a great space for a cowboy shower.

Choosing between a 2H with a hay rack or a 3H with no hay rack is easy for me. The extra stall wins every time.

Can't edit in time.

We did not see a 1 1/2 MPG increase, rather, a LOSS of that amount with the hay in the rack.

3 horse or 2 horse, Hayrack or no hay rack. The individual buying has the decision to make. I will say the person hauling 3 horses with no hayrack in a three horse trailer......trying hauling your hay in the bed when you go on a 2 week ride. Everyone has opinions and this forum is here to help answer those folks with questions. Also here is the definition of parasitic resistance - Parasitic resistance is resistance that you encounter in a circuit board or integrated circuit but not included in the original design -- an undesirable, unintended consequence of putting a concept into manufacturing. Since parasitic resistance does exist, you need to estimate its value and make sure the design still functions as intended. An example of parasitic resistance is the resistance of the traces in a circuit board or metal interconnects in an IC, the purpose of which is to connect components electrically according to the circuit diagram, but these connecting structures are not ideal. These connecting structures most likely also add parasitic capacitance and inductance to your design and, if substantial, should be included in your design (back-annotation) accordingly.

That is one defination, one which has no bearing on an airflow over an object. Concerning aerodynamics and its effects on trailers, this is the usage to which my thread was referring:

Our trailer came with the hay rack it's a three horse which I definatly love I put corral panels all horse feed and anything else I need in the third horse stall, and if I need to haul three horses the option is always there. The hay rack is tough to get hay into we have done it a few times but usually use the third stall but if I need it the option is always there!Mira.

We have the very very common configuration of 8 wide 10' short wall LQ, 3 horse with walk thru, stud wall, full door on first stall, hay rack, collapible rear tack, hay rack, remote start generator, awning. mangers.  For a show or trail ride, we will often put hay in that first stall.  On hunting trips, we use all space as we will take 2 riding mules and a pack mule, so we back up to the barn loft to load hay tarped by an OCD cowboy (nothing is getting in that hay!) and chairs, buckets etc in mangers. I agree that getting bales back up is a logistics problem, we have put a lariat around the bale, dallied off to the horn and ridden away from the trailer on the other side as hubby climbs ladder to guide hay to avoid scratching the trailer, and that works so great! (My cowgirl idea, too!... good mule, tho)

There is nothing on this trailer we would do without or downsize.  I would love a W.E.R.M. floor, insulated horse area roof, and air ride suspension if that ever comes to pass!  Good luck in your search.

I have a 2 horse GN with a small LQ. I pull it with a Ford F250 with a V10. Before that, I pulled it with a Dodge 2500 with a Cummins, and before that a Dodge V8 that had been boosted in HP. All three of them pulled it effortlessly. I usually only hauled one horse, so could use the other stall for storage if I wished. But the horse that I rode then wanted to be in the front stall, so that made it a little tougher!

If you can, get a 3 hrs, as the extra room is always handy and useful. I have a 2005, Ram, 3500, with auto trans and pull a 12,000 lb empty 4 horse. With 4 horses, all the hay/tack/fuel/and assorted junk we seem to haul around, I weigh about 20,000 LBS!!I have never had a problem towing up to 10,000 ft in the Sierras, which are almost 5-6% grade all the way for about 9-10 miles! This is what she looks like....new rig, Dodge 3500, and trails west 4 horse w/living qtrs
