I've got a 2004 F350 dually with the 6.0 auto transmission. It's only got 37,000 miles and stock except for an EGR delete kit. Four times I have been driving at highway speeds when the engine simply quits. It has happened both towing and not, when the engine is warm and usually after I've just accelerated to highway speed. When it happens, I let off the accelerator and after 5-6 seconds the engine starts again and I continue. One time it happened on a very busy interstate in Phoenix and I worry about where I'll be the one time it doesn't restart. Has anyone had this occur or have any ideas what's wrong with it? not sure if this is related. i have the '08 f350 with a 6.0? the 2x i have had time with it stalling - once it was fuel pump at 38k and the last time they needed to reprogram the brain for new fuel management? not that i am getting any better fuel mileage now

I would assume you wont find the cause without your friendly Ford dealers scan computer.   Might be a cam sensor or one of many other engine sensors in the system.

If it throws a check engine light.  You dealer can pull the code and trouble shoot it pretty quick.

Thanks for your feedback. It does not throw any engine lights and I have not had my dealer put it on the computer for this problem. I got the truck about a year and a half ago with very low miles and it ran sluggish at that time when I accelerated. I had the dealer put it on the computer and they couldn't tell anything was wrong. Then I had a diesel shop look at it and they suggested the EGR eliminator, which seemed to do the trick. I am going to ask my dealer about a possible fuel pump failure and see if that would show up on the computer scan. I had not heard of fuel management before, but will ask about that too. I love the truck and the way it pulls, but I don't like that constant feeling that the engine can shut down at any instant, regardless where I am or what I'm doing. Thanks again for your thoughts.

The fcuel management is the key like the previous person stated. Here some additional advice. If you can navigate through the internet get on google and look for forums for 6.0L ford diesel. I think one is called powerstroke diesel. There are alot of sites but pick one that deals with powerstroke. Join and descibe what your problems and symtoms are in detail on the forum. There are alot of ford techs and weekend wrenchers on thier that can give you good advice. Additional take the truck to pepboys autozone or your parts store. They can pull your codes instead of paying the stealership. Dont get me wrong I like our ford dealership alot. Have you had the fuel filter replaced? It is under your drivers side for the main filter and a small one on top of the motor. I owned 2 6.0L Ford and love the trucks. Most dealerships service people are technicians and not mechanics anymore since everything has computers and sensors. Good Luck.

Here is one forum http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.phpI was looking through my bookmarks for a company in Georgia that specializes in the 6.0. That company has a series of youtube videos. If I drive back to Georgia, I would like to take my own 6.0 in. I learned about that company on this site. There has been some good discussion about the powerstroke here and hopefully you can search back for threads on the subject. I didn't find my bookmark, but that information came from here anyway.I haven't had the issue that you are talking about - knock on wood - and don't remember running across it. There were severaly things that had to be addressed early on with the 6.0's and you may want to go to a dealer and find out what exactly has been done on yours and what service bulletins were out there for required changes. It seems like that the service bulletins, and having those repairs made, fixed a lot of the 6.0's.

There is also a sensor on the peddal itself that causes like problems.

www.powerstroke.org and go the the 6.0 section and type in "dead peddal".
