Last year I coated all the seams on my aluminum trailer roof with RV Pro-Flex. While checking it this year I noticed that it had peeled off all the black seam coating that was originally on there (looks like tar or or?) It stayed on the aluminum fine. What can I use to coat the edges where the black tar(?) and the aluminum meet?

I've been looking at a variety of roof sealants and they are either for aluminum roof or rubber roofs, but not both. I am assuming the black tar stuff up there is rubber? Not sure what I can use.

Thanks

Try a marine grade polyurethane caulking. Any old or loose caulking should be first removed and the area cleaned.

Here's a response I posted to a previous question:

"I highly recommend a marine grade polurethane caulking by 3M or Sikaflex. They have excellent wearability and a good resistance to UV damage. Do not use a household silicone caulking.

Another product that does well is an elastomeric coating. It will seal a seam or a whole roof, and have an excellent elasticity and bonding strength.

There are many companies that are now selling sealant tapes. They vary in quality and application, and they are being used on many new trailers and in repair centers. I don't think they have been around long enough, to know what the long term service life is. I would think the area in which you live, would greatly dictate the tape's longevity."

Thanks for your response. Last year I did use the elastomeric coating and this is what peeled off of the black stuff coating the seams.

Apparently the elastomeric coating bonded to the original coating, better than the coating had bonded to the trailer.
