I just bought a Silver Star trailer from a man in colorado.  The trailer has a valid colorado title.  The state of New Mexico requires two vin numbers to transfer the title.  I found the metal tag on the gooseneck, but have been unable to find another one anywhere.  Does anyone know where to look for another vin #?

I don't see where it says you have to have two vin numbers? http://www.mvd.newmexico.gov/Vehicles/Vehicle-Registration/Pages/Re...

Some manufacturers do put the vin number in another "secret" location on the trailer.  I would try to contact the Shadow factory in Williston FL..352-529-2190...several of their employees used to work for SilverStar and they might be able to help you as well.

I found out that there is no secret vin# location on the trailer.  The state police will do a title search similar to the one done for real estate.  What a pain!!!!

Yeah, that's where mine is too.  But the NM Department of Motor Vehicles is demanding a second location for the vin#.  The same number,  just stamped in more than one location on the trailer.  This "secret" location is supposed to foil trailer theives, as if the theives don't know where to look.  Anyway, we'll see what happens tomorrow.

If they are demanding a second location for the vin...tell them to show you in writing where it is required by NM Law... If worse comes to worse...get a die set and PUNCH the number into the trailer frame yourself...

That's my suggestion..They can be had at Harbor Freight pretty cheap.

When did they start that?  I bought a trailer last year and all they checked was the vin stamp on the gooseneck I-beam.

Still have not gotten the trailer registered.  My mom passed away, and I have been dealing with all the details of her estate.  the trailer is on the back burner for the moment.

Some trailers will have a second number some may have the last of the full VIN, but it depends on the maker of the trailer. There are no industry standards on where the secondary number is to be placed, totally up to the maker if they even apply one.

I might suggest, if they are still demanding the secondary number (i will give them a " good job" on this requirement--former Vehicle theft LEF official) at least you will figure out if your trailer is really what you think it is--or is stolen, but give someone at the NM state police a call they should have someone who would come ID the vehicle for you and /or find the secondary #, or the DMV they should have investigators who do this stuff daily.
never can be to careful buying from a private citizen even if they have a title??? computers can reproduce things these days that are amazing and look real/original.

Thanks all for the replies.  I got the trailer registered today, so all is well in that regard.  However, changing the title to my mom's jeep has so far required 8 trips to the DMV, and still not done.  Hopefully, tomorrow will be the final trip.  Now I understand why some people go ballistic in  post offices.  frustration beyond belief.
