As I've been looking at trailers, I've noticed that the label with the weight ratings, etc., does not disclose the actual weight of the trailer. However, it does disclose the GVWR, which I understand to be the maximum loaded weight of the trailer, and would include the weight of the trailer, cargo, and horses. It also gives a number for the maximum combined weight of livestock and cargo. Am I correct in understanding that the weight of the trailer itself would be the GVWR minus the maximum combined weight of livestock and cargo?

So on this trailer,http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/home/trailerdetail.asp?ID=281583, the actual weight of the trailer would be 6765 (16000-9235).

Not necessarily.  Some manufacturers do not include the tongue weight into the GVW.  Some do.  You also do not know how the manufacturer has chosen to distribute the max weight of cargo.  A conversation with the right person at the manufacturer should give you a pretty good idea of the empty weight of the trailer.

If you know the GVWR, and you know the max cargo load, why do you care about the empty weight?

I care about the weight of the trailer because I'm pulling it down the road regardless of whatever cargo I might be hauling. Two trailers might both be capable of hauling the weight I need to haul, but if one trailer weights 2000 lbs. more than the other, I assume I'll use more fuel and have more wear and tear on my truck.

Just an update on this thread. I called the manufacturer and they were able to tell me the exact weight based on my giving them the VIN of the trailer. It was exactly the GVWR minus the combined livestock and cargo capacity. In fact, the person I spoke with is the person who prepares the tags, and she told me that she calculates that combined livestock and cargo capacity by subtracting the trailer weight from the GVWR.

I suppose it could be different with other manufacturers, but I don't know why it would be.
