Our 08 F-250 came equipped with traction control. This works ok but I'm concerned that we'll still get stuck in a soft/wet pasture. (4wd on soft ground with open diffs = one front and one rear spinning wheel). And it will also help when getting around on winter roads.

I'm thinking about installing an Eaton True-trac in the rear. Has anyone done this? Did you feel it was worth the $800?

You sure your truck doesn't have a limited slip rear diff.?? I got a 2010 2500HD GM with traction control as well as a locking rear diff. Got your truck's window sticker handy?

Have your dealership run the VIN, it FORD is like GM they can tell you everything about your truck...and it should be NO CHARGE...

It's definitely an open diff. I saw it when I changed gear oil.

Ford offered an Open, a Limited Slip and new in 2011 a Electronic Locking rear end.

I've never had the open rear ends. I have had serveral of the limited slips and still felt like I needed more tractions. Too many job sites are real muddy in the wet months and when I backed in and would still get stuck having one front and one rear tire spinning even with the limited slip.  So I opted for the electronic locking on my 2011 truck.

I am learning that there are pros and cons to locker as well. If I'm on any kind of side hill and engage the locker, the truck has a tendancy to slide sidewize when both rear wheels lock and begin spinning.  When I forget to turn the Locker off and pull on good traction, the truck bucks and I wonder what the heck, until I remember to unlock the rear end.

Its a $390 factory option,  So $800 for an aftermarket is not unrealistic price.

I have a true trac in one track and the ARB in the other truck. The true track is very nice, I do like being able to turn the arb on and off as I please plus it is a full locker.

From what I hear, the true-trac (torsen) offers more torque than the average factory clutch-pack limited slip. The reason you don't see them as often from the factory is cost.

Lockers obviously do the best but I suspect that's overkill. We expect some mud and snow but not rock climbing.
