Afford to get your diesel fixed if it isn't under a warranty...My 06 6.0l wouldn't start again..After it sitting all day I got it started and I did get a code this time. Well it was the fuel injection module. I was curious what that part would cost me if I had to pay full price...Well after I had to put my eyes back in..It was 700$. It a shame that one little box is as much as a payment or two...If not for the warranty it would of sat at the dealer cause I just can't pull that out of my ya know what

Just spent $1048 on an all the way around brake job yesterday!  Yep, it expensive but I guess you pay to play.

You can repair it yourself if it can sit for a while, you can send the FICM out to be rebuilt to swamps diesel.

Some things we have to do ourselves some not.  I did a 4 wheel complete break job incl. turned rotors for 300 ish.  I then replaced my front wheel bearing for 400.  I imagine i saved 1k in labor if not more.

I just added a coolant filter this weekend hoping to avoid re-clogging my oil cooler.

I hate being out of warranty.

I do have an extended 7/200 warranty for after the 5/100 ended but it really doesn't cover alot.

I hope you review his site for as much help as you can get.

90% of the time the module does not have to be changed out, just re-flashed by the Ford dealer and 90% of the time at no charge to the owner.  I am a used dealer and have had 2 re-flashed at no charge to me.  They was covered as a recall item.  1 was a no start problem and the other was a rough idle problem.  So far never had to replace the actual unit.  So if they replaced the module, they did that to make more money from Ford!  When the dealer does recall items they really do not make much money but if they can do warranty work, it is like a Christmas party for the dealer.....

check out www.powerstroke.org for info on the 6.0s and www.dieselpowermag.com and search back issues and you will find a nice write up for the 6.0s and what to look for.

Thx Hogtown. That is interesting to know. I may have to ask them about that since all they put on the paperwork was a EEC (QUICK TEST) - DIAGNOSIS. I have checked the Ford site before for recalls and I have never had one issued for this truck... I have replaced the brakes on it myself, but oil changes and anything that is covered under the 100k warranty the dealer does the maintenance.

I'm not 100% sure that the injector module is listed on the recall list, my opinion it is one of those deals (out of site out of mind) if Ford can drag their feet long enough they will not have to issue a recall.  I found the information on powerstroke.org a couple of years back when I had an 04 or 05 model with some problems.  I just took it in and told them what I found (it did cost me a $79.00 fee to check the truck out) then the dealer called me and said that the injector module needed to be reflashed and was ready to pick up.  No other charges.

This was a truck that I bought at an auction with 141-k miles.

Just like my 07.5 Dodge, Dodge found major issues with the vent on top of the fuel tank and they spent over $8000. fixing my truck because of a little vent filter.  I ask if they was going to issue a recall and DODGE said NO, they would fix them on a have too basis and if trucks had higher miles they would say it is because of dirty fuel or lack of maintance.  This was straight from the service manager!

Once a vehicle is out of warranty I go to my regular mechanic. I usually save 50% or more from what a dealer charges. It is no different than if your fridge unexpectadly dies, your horse gets hurt or my well pump went out and taht was over 2K. You have to live with in your means. Once my vehicles are out of warranty they are typically paid for so I have alot of extra cash in case repairs are needed.

If a person searches the diesel stop site, you can find a procedure to resolder the FICM module. That seems to be the issue on plenty of them. If you're handy with a soldering iron, and feel you skills are up to the task...you can save a bunch.

i hear you loud and clear. took my 2002 duramax in last wed for a front end allignment. i ended up paying $1648.28 for a hydro boost assy, 2 rotors, 1 pad, labor. plus they had the truck for 2 days, and i had to rent a car.the boost alone was $726.40. to make it worse the chevy garage made me sit and wait for 5 hours without even coming to me. i had to go into the garage and ask what was going on.

wrote a letter to the general manager, he responded by opp's sorry someone screwed up by not checking with you.

in the last year i have spent with them close to $5000.00.

i was IRATE!!!

Hi, I was doing a search for an extended warranty on a truck, and came across these messages. My question is Does anyone out there have an extended warranty on their truck? If so do you like it? Was it worth the money to get it? Which one do you like best? Thanks for any help or information.

I worked for a Ford dealer and most of the after market warranties we sold were not worth the paper they were written on. The warranty companies will try to find every reason possible not to pay a claim. Right now there are a lot of companies advertising on the radio about extended warranties especially for vehicles with over 100K. I always laugh when I hear the ads. I keep high mileage vehicles but try to keep a slush fund for repairs and make them as soon as I notice a problem.

I agree, I don't believe in extended warranties.  A slush fund is much better.

The 6.0 is known for having bad FICM and for the high pressure lines  under the valve covers loosing their plugs. Mine failed at 98,000 and I got it fixed under warranty. Otherwise the total bill would have been around $1800

I bought a new truck this past Aug, Because I don't like to fix trucks. I'd rather make the schedued payment than have the unexpected repair that I can't plan for.

How can I?  By not being over-extended in my finances.  If a $700 repair would bring your world to a halt, I would take a hard look at your in/out flow of $$$.

Vehicles are not expected to go much (if any) past their warranty periods without repairs.  If they were, the manufacturers would be confident enough to provide a longer warranty.  When/if I have to make payments on a vehicle, all effort is made to pay it off before the end of warranty and then quickly build a repair fund.

Hey ya'll....I DON'T TRUST THE DEALERSHIP FIX!!! I blogged about our 6.0 diesel Ford about a year ago... we had problems with it after pulling our trailer around the Ozark hills. It puked antifreeze, it had some other problems... We had it fixed under warranty... but they used the same head bolts,EGR, and the same stuff to fix it. Why??? If it wasn't right from the factory, what would make them believe it would be OK now? My husband found and bought a Freightliner! I know it has the power and the braking power. I see and hear alot of stories about people being under-trucked, and over trailered... but this move could wreak havoc on your budget and retirement plans...

Personally, I don't think they build trucks as good as they did in the nineties. It's getting more difficult to work on them yourself. I have a 96 GMC with 239,000 hard miles on her and all I have had to do is basic maintenance. No tranny problems, no head gasket issues, no wheel bearing issues, no fuel filter sensor issues etc. and all under 60,000 miles. Honestly, I trust my 96 more than I trust my 2005 3500 Duramax. Love the Duramax when she runs fine but can't count on her. Next truck....Dodge with a jake brake. Trucks shouldn't be having these issues so soon! And don't tell me you have to pay to play.......The big three need to stop lining their greasy pockets and build a decent dependable truck!

Our Duramax is out of warranty and we take it to a local mechanic which has been good.
