Long story here!

Better half is doing well in the Cowboy Mounted Shooting, was setting good with points to go to the World in ladies level 1. (in just about 3 months)  But now has won twice and moved up to a ladies level 2 and is 70 points short with 3 chances left.

Here is the deal, another person has ask to use our LQ trailer to take to the World Shoot to save them Hotel money.  I have tried not to be a complete a** about it, but how can I tell them NO so they can understand?  They have even gone as far as telling me the better half will not quailify for world since she still needs 70 points so she wouldn't make it any way.  What a jack a** and still ask me to use our trailer.  I told him I was sending her to the next 3 shoots no matter the cost just to prove them wrong!  If it was just a horse trailer for a day or 2 I might think about it, but we are talking about full blown LQ trailer and will be gone for 6 days!

Sorry to ramble on, just needed to vent and find out how to tell them NO!

Thank you, I will pass it along to her, she was not really looking to go to the World this year but we lucked out on a super little quarter horse mare that was my daughters barrel horse and it doing really well with shooting.

I thought about it that way too, now that we have a NICE trailer we both like and agreed on. (that was a first!)  I even told the guy our insurance WOULD NOT cover it and he has offered to insure it now.

Poor HTB ...

You're not the bad guy here... The persistant asker is.  Like Nancy Regan urged. "Just say No"

You can sugar coat the word with "I'd rather not let my trailer out of my driveway"

Tell him you subscribe to Ben Franklin's advice..."Neither a borrower nor a lender be"...PERIOD.

Like Raven, I don't loan something I couldn't afford to replace(which nowadays, is just about any and everything...retiree on fixed, modest (and FULLY taxable, unlike SS)survivor annuity speaking...). Actually, I NEVER loaned my horse trailer, nor did I ever even ASK someone to borrow theirs, as I try to never expect of others what I wouldn't expect of myself.

Simplest is to be blunt..."I do not loan out my trailer"...end of discussion. If they get mad, well, that's THEIR problem. I find the behavior you've related to be brazenly RUDE, actually...and I wouldn't give such folks the time of day!

BTW, congrats to your wife on her accomplishments. I live just down the road from what is apparently the national HQ of the SASS, who moved into my area several years ago. I've not been out there, but hear it is a thriving endeavor.

Recently there was a discussion on another forum about similar circumstances to yours.

http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=12321&posts=20

As you can see, most of the owners will not and do not, loan out their expensive equipment. Taken further, there have been postings about the rental of personal equipment. Again the consensus was, that your expensive equipment was in jeopardy of being damaged, and you would have little hope of recovery.

In the past when I was starting out and had older inexpensive trailers, I did loan my 2H BP trailer to two different individuals. It was a straight load, and I had recently lined the sidewalls with tongue and groove oak, and hadn't yet installed the side mats. It was returned to me with the sidewalls trashed, the metal center divider smashed beyond repair and the ramp badly dented outwards. My "friend" had used it to capture and transport some feral cows of his friend.

The second loan was to a different person who had a track TB that needed to be hauled for breeding. It was returned with a sliding side window kicked out, a butt bar ripped from the wall, and the safety chain loops bent so they would no longer fit my truck.

I loaned my tractor to a neighbour, who, when finished with it, left it in the drive in front of my barn. When I went to put it away, it wouldn't move in any gear. With some trouble shooting, I found it had a broken axle. The neighbour swears that it was "fine" when he left it off, so any problems had to be the result of me doing something wrong.

I will haul some horses for some of my friends, and am now an expert in replying with the short, sweet answer "NO", when asked if anyone can borrow my belongings. I can not and will not afford supplying equipment for other people. I will ask to do the job for them, and if that won't suffice, they'll have to ask another person. I have some close friends that readily abide by this practise, and others who are found not to be friends, when they act negatively with my refusal.

I have been criticised for being "lucky" to own my equipment. I am fortunate indeed, to be in this place at this time, through the efforts of my parents and my wonderful wife. There is no luck in the many hours we have spent labouring for these belongings, and the things we forgo in their accumulation. It wasn't luck, that we bought trailer wrecks, rebuilt them and sold them for better products. It wasn't luck that reasoned our first truck was kept for over twenty years, while our friends bought new vehicles every few years.

We ARE lucky and right now, haven't a problem saying "NO".

Gard

I agree that you need to just say "NO." I do not even loan out my hay racks as they seem to always come back with a flat tire, broken boards or even one time with a bent running gear. That said, last year when my tractor broke down and the hay was ready, a friend offered the use of his tractor which I graciously accepted. While I was using it, the belt broke. I replaced it and put 60 more gallons of fuel in it (besides what I used) before it was returned. I also went and baled 30 big rounds for him as he was out of town and rain was coming. But that's the kind of friendship we have. If he wanted to use my trailer, no problem, because I know it would come back just as good, if not better. Anybody else, NO WAY!!

First, congratulations and best wishes to your wonderful wife for her accomplishments thus far and those to come.  Good for you in your loyal support of her !

The trailer belongs to y'all, and, if you are not using it, it should be available at the ready should you wish to use it.  You earned it, you maintain it, and you have every right to say, NO, NOPE, BETTER NOT, etc.  You don't even need to explain why, any friend would accept a simple , Nah, better not, at face value and go right on talking about the weather.

To say, in effect, that you wouldn't need the trailer anyway because your wife has no chance to overcome the point spread, so you could loan them the trailer...........well, now, that's just no manners, and rather self-centered.  Don't think I'd feel the least bit bad about not loaning anything to someone with an attitude like that.

If they can afford to insure yours to borrow it, they can just take that money right down there and rent that motel.  That is what I would say, if I were in the mood to be kind about it.

So go to the remaining shoots with a glad heart!!!!!

And forward this thread to the would be borrowers.

Let me add congratulations to your wife and good luck to her!!

I still can't believe people would even ASK to borrow something like a LQ trailer.  We worked long and hard for ours-- but even before we got it-- I had trailer envy believe me but if we couldn't afford to rent a cabin or whatever we didn't go.

I'm just shocked that people would keep asking after the first no

There are some things people with class & dignity just don't ask to borrow. My bird dog, my shotgun, my truck, my wife, or my horse trailer come to mind quickly. I agree with everyone else- Just say no. Hope there's no hard feelings, but if there are now, I'm sure they'd be much harder feelings after he took it and brought it back with the damage that you know will happen.

We say "We'll get back with you".  Most of time we do but we also just forget that question ever came up.  Asked one person to haul our horse - we would sign papers, follow him, and put gas in the truck.  He decided on the day of the pick up to decline.  We were upset but later we just let it go.  Saying "NO" is part of life and you have to decide when and where to share items.  Good Luck with the Mounted Cowboy Shooting.  We have a old steel beaten up trailer and we are picky about who takes it.  We share with only one other person and then she gets the third degree.  Have fun and be careful on the roades.

I did tell them today they could use it for the price of $50,000 CASH up front and when they was done they could keep it!

No tippy toe'n here ...  I'll add that in an emergency... Sick horse, disabled truck, etc. My trailer or truck will be there.  I'll be driving, but it will be there.   Same with my tractor, backhoe, mower, welder, etc.  It'll be there but I or wife will be operating it.  I don't like to borrow equipment for the same reasons.  But life happens.

HTB, your so called friends are only wanting a cheaper option.  If you let them take your trailer, you're not helping.  You're being abused.

In the early 80's my future brother in law asked to take my horse and trailer on a camping trip. He had never owned a horse and no experience. I had lived on my own and worked hard to pay for everything I was in my early 20's. I politely said I do not let anyone take my horse or trailer. He never spoke to me again and as you can imagine it made my marriage stressful but needed to stand up for what I beleive in. I couldn't believe my husband, his wife, or my mother in law did not put him in his place. We were divorced 3 long years later. No one should feel guilty for not wanting to lend something of value out.

You could tell the "borrower" that it would be good for the economy/country if he/she/they would go ahead and buy a lq trailer.

Well, I think they got the point!

By the way, the better half placed 2nd today in level 2 and got 52 of the 76 points she needed!

So if the rain lets up she will be able to get the other 24 points this coming weekend in Hubbard!

Thank you all again, HTB

HTB, when I first read the tread, I had to go back and look at who the poster was. You are one of the last people I would think of having a problem telling someone what's on your mind! Ha ha.....no offense meant.....I 've read your posts and good advice over time......direct, to the point, no punches pulled! Like the others have said, you said no- it's your call- no big deal. In my experience, the people who think it is a big deal are the same ones that would bring it back damaged somehow, but not think it's a big deal for them to do anything necessary to put it back to original (or better) condition.

I made the mistake of both loaning out my horse and my LQ to people I liked and trusted, and my horse came back lame and my LQ came back with bent axles. So you can guess what my answer is now, not just NO but HELL NO! Good Luck to your wife I hope she makes it.

Well, I had to get rude with him now.

He calls and said "since Toni is going to have the points to make the World and you will only be hauling 1 horse I will just ride with ya'll so I want have to use my truck and trailer and still save on a room".  Did not ask, just told me!

So my reply to him was Oh HELL NO!  I'm not rooming with anybody else for 5 days in a 10' LQ!  I sent him a text of a few dealers in the area that offers LQ trailer and told him to give the a call.

Made him mad!  Oh well enough is enough!

He's obviously NOT a friend; he's a user. As you realize, you have no obligation to him for his crass behaviour. As was previously stated, if a person is in need, most people will try to help out. But when a person has his own rig, and invites himself along so he can save a dollar, he's ignorant and crude. This, on top of his negative comments about your successful wife, would place him on the top of my DO NOT CALL LIST.

You should send him an Email link of the responses in this posting, so he will be appraised of what the general population thinks of his behaviour.

before I had the money for the LQ I slept on a cot and used a portapotty.
You have to live within your means. Sounds like they should be staying home and saving money.

You know we just got our first LQ, although we have had some pretty nice finished dressing room trailers. The real LQ is alot different. I wouldnt loan it not only due to its cost, but just the fact that its kinda private. You know, my bed and bed linens, my personal stuff in the medicine cabinet, my stuff in the fridge etc etc. I have a funny anal thing about my personal possessions, and I just wouldnt want someone pilfering through them or sleeping in my bed. I also have issues with people thinking that now they can just move in and bunk with me. I dont want to seem snobby, but I go to relax and unwind and have a good time. Now that we have scrimped and worked and finally gotten the trailer of our dreams, I dont want to get up and my couch is pulled out and someone on it or have to wait for someone to get out of my bathroom so I can get dressed. We got it to enjoy and if my husband is not with me, then I enjoy the alone time. I think working my way out of this predicament is harder than telling someone they cant borrow it. I will likely end up making someone mad. any advice ?

Is this guy a bit of a dim bulb, or does he just not care?  i agree with everyone else.. This "friend" is an ignorant neanderthal (The Geico guys will be afer me now!!) who initially disrespected your wife and and devalued her accomplishments while attemping to borrow a thing of value, then when proven wrong, attempts to invite himself along anyway.. He is apparently oblivious of  his own crass stupidity and is NO friend. Tell this loser "NO" and be done with him...

I loaned my old steel, Circle M stock trailer to a "FRIEND" some years back. Trailer had always been under a three sided shelter, may have been rained on four times in 10 years, they borrowed it the day before a freezing rain storm..... Brought it back about 30 minutes after the state salt spreader truck made a pass by our house. I was in the hospital at the time..... Had I been home, they too would have been in the hospital. By the time I was able to attempt to clean it up, several weeks had passed, you could just about hear the paint popping off.... They never said thank you, let me clean it up for you, kiss my a$$ or anything.... Never had much use for that "FRIEND" since that day....Sounds like you may need to slam their trigger finger in the truck door, They'll have no need to go after that!!!!

I hope your wife kicks butt at the next shoot. Tell her good luck and she is going to make it to world. We want pics.!!!! My hubby is trying his hand at mounted shooting. He is just going up to friends place and they practice in his areana. It is fun sport but kind of expensive.

Thank you, I will tell her....  She is bumded out right now, the rain has canceled the Hubbard shoot this weekend, so she is going to Vernon next weekend.  It is an indoor arena and 4X's the points and actually has an added money plus I had her enter a $25. side jack pot for her class that is a 100% pay back.

I thought is way a little high to start with, but after we bought our guns and some ol' style clothing everything else is about the same as the roping and barrel racing stuff, but we can both do this!  I will get my picture from my other computer and download them this weekend.

If this guy has his own trailer, then, why in the H is he trying to bum off of you? I don't get it unless he is just trying to save $,or,maybe he doesn't have a LQ?

Well doesn't it have a dressing room? What's wrong with him putting a cot in there and running a little plug in heater from a campsite,or something? Man.That guy just doesn't get it. Should now be titled "how long does it take to figure out you aren't WELCOME"?

I watched mounted shooting once at MSU. It was really neat and might I say requires alot of talent. They had earplugs for their horses. Do the horses still wear earplugs outside?

Or turn the tables on him-

You know, the wife may not do well and it's going to cost us a lot of money to go so maybe we should just take your trailer because it won't cost you as much gas money as it would have me.

And nowhere, in anything you've written have I heard about sharing the costs. What a freeloader.

Yes we use the plugs inside and out.  However the horses we are using are doing great with and without them, but we use them to save the hearing!  ALL ABOUT THE HORSES!

It took a few mins. to get the horses ok with stuff in their ears but they are great now, we just make it part of tacking up, brush, pad, saddle, ear plugs, boots etc.!

Better halfs horse is doing GREAT and started great, mine on the other hand is being flat out lazy in the arena!  On the trail or out in the open she is great and doing great with the gun fire, but in the arena she can find ANY gate ASAP to try and leave!  We are getting there....

Here is the lastest update from Toni (my better half) in Vernon, Texas at the regionals that is 4X the points.  She only needs 24 to make the World next week.  As of now after 3 stages of a 6 stage match she is setting 67 out of 125 total entries overall and has 232 points as of now!

Back to the guy this post was about, he showed up and started calling at 12am wanting to stay in our trailer.  Toni refused to answer the phone since she went by herself.  She and a couple of others followed each other up there and I got to baby set the other 87 animals.  Kind of hard to ask someone to help out and feed for you with this many critters.

Any way, the guy missed the check in and is not getting to shoot this weekend.  Now he is crying cause the CMSA will not change the rules for checkin to let him shoot.!  They have rules for a reason!

Congrats to your wife. Are you serious? This guy is calling at 1200 AM to stay in your trailer at an event? He seriously needs to get a life. Or even more so, needs to make some hotel reservations (if he's going to qualify) or be prepared to sleep in his truck. OK and if he shows up at your house in the middle of the night, call the police, he's nuts.I agree it's one thing to borrow a trailer, but campers of any sort are a whole other issue. Not to mention showing up at someone's trailer at 1200 expecting to be able to sleep in it is not just insane, just plain rude. As for missing his check in, sounds like plain old Karma kicking in.Ever think of sending him ads for living quarter trailers? Not linked to this site, but from the homepages that you find on this site.BTW you must have one sweet LQT for him to want to show it off at the finals as his own.

Yes, I am serious!  Toni said when she got up Saturday morning (7am) to fee her horse he was parked accross the lot with his horse still standing in the trailer.  Yes that is from 12am till 7am in a POS straight load trailer.

Funny you say that, Toni and I had just talked about that on Thursday night whe we was loaded it up.

By the way, she started the day with a good run, but after the rundown when she crossed the time line to finish all I know is the horse made a nice sliding stop and she didn't!  Hit the wall and broke her little finger on her shooting hand.

But she did go on to finish the next 2 and so far she ended up mid 60's overall and I think 2nd in her class and ended up with around 100 points.  That is 76 more than she needed for the WORLD!

Congratulations Toni!!!

Now...why in the Sam Hill would he expect your wife, a woman traveling alone, to let him in the trailer??? Would he like another man staying with HIS wife? That is so nuts I just can't comprehend it. Not to mention totally unsafe for your wife. This is rapidly becoming stalker behavior-please be careful and a police report wouldn't be a bad idea.

The stalker behavior crossed my mind Sunday morning when Toni called and said everytime her and the girls she was running with turned around he was there!

What a dead beat!  Found out other news today about him.  He was run off from the place that his wife works for starting crap with her at work while she was on the clock.

Not only would I not allow some guy in there, but that request from the fellow would go over like a you-know-what in a dive suit with MY husband. As I am sure it did with you,Hogtown Boss.

BTW,is that a Bison trailer? Their interiors are some of the few that I've seen that don't require you to be a gymnast to enter/exit the sleeping area.

Oops, sorry, now I've scrolled across the full page, and see that it is a Sundowner with a really nice roomy interior. No wonder he wanted to have a sleep over.

That's one nice trailer/truck you have there. No wonder he latched onto you and your wife.

Hope your wife's finger feels better soon and WOO HOO! on qualifying.

Um perhaps your wife needs to walk softly and carry a big stick when you're not with her.

Not a big stick, we bought some live rounds for her RUGER .45's.  BIG GUNS, little lady!  She will just have to shoot left handed for a little while.  Ended up being to bone right above her little figure.

That's one nice trailer/truck you have there. No wonder he latched onto you and your wife.

Hope your wife's finger feels better soon and WOO HOO! on qualifying.

That's not a bad idea. That guy sounds like real bad news- that's just unbelievable!

That's too bad about your wife's hand. The finals is this weekend, isn't it? Hope it goes well for her!

Well, her hand ended up being worse than we thought, so since she made her "quota" to at least qualifiy for the WORLD and getting her jacket.  She is going to save up and actually GO to the WORLD next year.  Hopefully I will be able to qualifiy next year and we will be able to go together.

Going to see if I can find her a sponsor for next year, cause the fees for World was going to be around $750 for stall and entry fee for the week.....

dawnb, No the points start at zero the day after the World is over.  So everone has a fresh start.   There is alot of shoots that offer so much X the points.  Like our local club offers 2X's the points for members and regional matches can be upto 4X or even better.  That really helps out if you are wanting to make the World with limited shoots.  Level 1 you have to have 200 points, level 2, 300 points all te way to level 6, each level you have you have 100 more that you number to make the World Shoot.  Now they have changed the rules to move up a class, you have to have 4 wins in a full class to move up, then at level 4 you have to have 5 wins in a full class and so on.....

Laurie, ha ha, your funny!

I'm a little late reading all this, but had to toss in my 2 cents worth.

This guy is a user, but you already know that.  There are many people out there who will never do for themselves as long as there is someone else out there that will do for them instead.  He's obviously one of them.

Second, the guy is an *$$.  He didn't get what he wanted, so he started insulting you.  Bigger *$$.

Third, any man who believes he can just hop in uninvited and share a trailer with a woman, married or single, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  That he obviously felt he could just bulldoze his way past all objections is beyond words.  Words to describe that behaviour aren't fit to print.

Fourth, my first trailer was a 12' tag along stock trailer.  On week long hauls we'd bed it deep, and on arrival would fork it clean and pitch the tent in the stock compartment.  Worked just fine.  I know a family with 9 children who make it to all the local horse shows and they reside in *gasp* a very large tent.  They've done this for years.  This man is lazy, cheap, and ignorant.

Fifth, OMG!  Congrats to your wife on her great results.  I have to say it was really exciting to keep getting the updates and see how well it was going, especially when we were all rooting for her to make her points.  What a great achievment.

Another a**hole update.

We just got word that he did not make enough money at the world to have fuel to get home!

And he was following people around all week trying to bum off of them too....This guy will never give up!
