Location: Vermont | Mom Picks Up Daughter On Horse, School Balks by Amy Hatch (RSS feed) Sep 5th 2009 7:12PM A Florida mom rode her horse to school to pick up her daughter. Credit: News4Jax.com A Florida mom tried to rein in a new school-dismissal policy -- literally. A new parking policy at Crystal Springs Elementary School in Jacksonville, Fla., requires parents to wait in line, inside their cars, while the students are released one-by-one. Fed up, one mom showed up on horseback, citing fuel costs and time spent waiting as the reason for her four-legged mode of transportation. "I don't have the funds in my budget to sit in lines for an hour to two and a half hours to wait for my daughter," said the woman, identified only as Deidre by news station WJXT. Deidre, who said she and her daughter often ride horses together, was prevented from taking the child home and was ushered off the property by police. "Our first priority is the safety of our children, and during our arrival/dismissal, their safety is first and foremost a priority on campus," said Principal Jaime Johnson, according to WJXT. Deirdre said Johnson refused to release her daughter, and in fact, pulled the girl back from her mother. " (Johnson ) would not turn loose of my daughter's hand," Deidre told WJXT. The principal stated that she did not think it was safe for the child to ride on horseback through the streets around the school, many of which are under construction. Instead, a police officer drove the girl home, where she waited alone until her mother arrived...but I guess the principal thought it was safe for the girl to wait at the house ALONE...

| Another example of how the public school systems in this country are moving to being in total control of people's kids. I guess I'd wound up in JAIL if she tried to pull my kid back from me. |

Location: South of Dallas | I bet that they would have released that kid if the parent was there to pick her up and riding a motorcycle! Another example of the school system thinking they are better parents that the actual parent. And what about the police LEAVING the kid alone at home! |

Location: Mt. Clemens, MI 48043 | Been in long lines to pick up children from different schools at different times. They should have just given her the child. If they felt it caused problems proceed to provide her a letter/notice/reasons why this was a bad idea. Suggest she attends the PTA to see if there is a better solution for the traffic problem. I'm sure someone can come up with a better solution. I understand about the gas and money - I face that every day. People had horses before they made automobiles for transportation. |

Location: michigan | face it- had the school allowed her to take the kid on the horse and something happened, you know the school would have been sued. We live in such a time in which people are all too anxious to blame some else and sue if something goes wrong. It was a no win situation from the start. |

Location: Corpus Christi, Texas | You DO have a point there... I remember reading about a burgler who fell through a pharmacy roof while trying to break in to steal drugs.. He sued the pharmacist and WON..... Now THAT'S crazy!! |

Location: South Central OK | Farmbabe is correct. If the horse had spooked (and you know they do when people are watching) and the kid had fallen off (no helmet I'm sure) on the school property they would have been liable. If you hate this new world, shake your finger at a lawyer...they don't always do what is right but they almost always get paid! |

Location: beaumont texas | while it may seem like plaintiff lawyers will take just about any kind of case, there would be no case if some person didn't want to be paid money/damages for a situation in the first place. and so many people nowadays do not want to take responsibility for their own actions, so instead they find a lawyer to take their case. and it is not the lawyer awarding the money; it is the jury, made up of people like you and me(or insurance companies settle because they are afraid of what a jury might award.) and guess what, it is the younger people on the jury that like to award the big amounts, not the older people who have worked hard for a living. so next time you get a jury summons, think about doing that bit of civic duty so there can be at least one reasonable, responsible person that just may be able to talk some sense into the rest of the jurors who want to give away lots of money to someone who may not deserve it because of stupidity. if you have kids, most likely you are going to sit in car pool lines. i, too, hate wasting my time waiting to pick up my kids. so.. i time it to either be at the very front or come in at the very end, when most kids have already been picked up. HOWEVER, i would not expose school kids or any of my horses to the situation this florida mom created. i liked the response of the person who said she should go to the school or a school meeting and try to work out a solution. oops, gotta run...time to pick up kids.. |
