I'm looking to upgrade from a bumper pull to a gooseneck with a small living quarters. The trailer I'm interested in is an older Featherlite. I have a short bed 3/4 ton hd and wanted to know if I had to be concerned with the trailer not having a tapered nose? Is there a special hitch that I can have installed so it wont interfere?
Thanks in advance for any insight.

B&W hitch has something called a 4" ball extender that shows to work with short bed trucks.  I think they have a website as well.  Try to google it.

How wide is the trailer? If it is only 7 feet, you should have nothing to worry about. If you can, hook it up and try it out.

I sent a question to b&w, thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately I don't have a gooseneck hitch installed so I can't try it out :>(

They make a 9" and a 16" extension.  I have a 9" that I used with my short-bed F350 (2005 model).  It is actually still on the LQ eventhough I now have a long bed.

Yes! The Pop up Hitch extender is the way to go! I have the same as you, 3/4 ton shortbed, no angle full front gooseneck. Works fabulous!!! AND the cable to open the ball without crawling into the bed is a major +++++++. can u tell that I love it?
Not too expensive either :)

We have the B&W turnover. It seems to stand up to its reviews. I also thought I needed to worry about the short bed so I bought the overpriced 4 inch drop back. I used it once. Basic weight distribution Physics came into play. I did notice a difference in the squat of the truck. I took it out and used the ball that came with the hitch ever since. If you want mine you can have it for half price plus the freight.

How do you go about hooking/unhooking your safety chains if you don't have to crawl into the truck bed....?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I thought it wouldn't be a problem but have heard horror stories in the past and didn't want to buy an "accident waiting to happen".

Our friend has the same setup and doesn't "bother" with the chains and the breakaway.

The cable is a nice feature....but I ALWAYS climb up in the bed and hook/unhook the safety chains.  They are there for a reason. Safety is way more important than convenience.

I just lean over from the back end of the bed, grab the chains off of the king pin ledge and snap snap..hook then into the loops on the bed floor. I could reach the ball hook up before like this, but do not have the leverage or strength to pull the pin/push the pin for conventional hook up...pop-up makes it easy. Now, If I have my tailgate on...I have to crawl a bit...but since I have dented up two gates in as many years...it is usually off!

Has anyone used the 16" Popup? I have the 9" and my trailer will still hit the truck if I turn too sharp. The truck is an 04 dodge 3500 SRW quadcab. The trailer is an 8' wide Adam it is tapered some maybe down to 7'-7'6".

Thanks

Mike
