Location: michigan | halter- this classes judges a horse conformation only. They are judged walk toward the judge, trotting away from judge as well as standing still.showmanship- this class is judged on the presentation of the horse and handler. The ability to handle, lead, stop and set the horse for inspection. Most classes involve a pattern dsiplaying the handlers ability to turn, stop, trot and other wise present the horse.Western pleasure- this is a "rail class" in which the horse is ridden in the arena on the rail at three sometimes four gaits- walk, jog, lope and occasionally hand gallop. The horse is judged on manners, collection, quality, softness and the gait performed. Depending on the breed, horses show be relaxed and willing. The horse is ridden in western tack and rider is also in western attire.English pleasure- another rail class which horses are ridden in english ( hunt or saddleseat) tack ( saddles and bridles) and the rider in appropriate attire. The gaits asked for are walk, trot, strong trot, canter and sometimes hand gallop( depending on breed) Again horses are judged on manners, collection, impusion, quality, and suitablity. Equtation classes are judging the rider in classes split between western and english. Judges are looking for riders who have a solid seat, legs under them, not leaning back or forwards, good hands...in this class its pretty much about the rider.you can google 4-h web sites for more infomation as well.

Location: michigan | proper attire need not be expensive.western pleasure- hat, long sleeved shirt, jean and western type boots. Chaps are nice but are optional. ladies should pull hair back into a bun or pony tail ( pony tails to be are not suitable...they bounce making your ride look rough)and wear some make up( perks up the face from a distance) You can wear some earrings but nothing that dangles. Men should be clean cut. You might want to attend a show in your area and take notice of the clothing people wear for the difference classes. Take note for color combinations as some colors look better on a bay while they don't work on a chestnut. You can do the same for tack. Loud colors might be great for barrel racers but not so much for rail classes. As you get more comfortable about your show clothes and tack, you can slowly buy what you need instead of rushing out and either paying too much or buying the wrong thing. So go to some shows, take some notes, ask questions and do some shopping.

Location: South Central OK | For a simple open show all you need (Halter/Pleasure) is a pressed button down shirt and starched jeans or pressed slacks, belt and straw hat and boots. Remember it is better to have the clothing/tack fit well and be clean than fancy and sloppy.
