Anybody know how to attach a hitch to the back of a gooseneck horse trailer? I know it can be done but don't know how to do it myself or where to take it to get it done.

Edited to add the trailer would be for hauling a golf cart not more horses.

Thanks!!

Call around to your local hitch shops, needs to be one who can do custom work.

The hitches I've seen at shows, have a standard 2" receiver mounted to the rear beam and cross braced underneath to the frame. They have a short piece of the rubber bumper cut out of the center and a "U" shaped bracket fabricated to carry the end of the receiver.

I don't know how, but an Ohio dealer from whom we bought a trailer, brings back two at a time from IN. He has a temporary hook up that leaves no marks on the back of the towing, (forward) trailer. The only thing I can think of is that he removes the entire rubber bumper, and installs a full rear plate with a hitch.

His travels are mostly interstate and empty, so there shouldn't be an unusual amount of stress on the back of the frame. A small landscaping trailer and cart would be a fraction of the weight.

My concern with this set up is what would you do if there is an emergency and you need to unload the horses quickly?  I always worry about the what ifs and worst case scenarios....

Hopefully there's a side escape door or two, that the horses can bail out of.

Would the type of construction of the trailer matter when doing this?

I have one on the back of my o7 Bloomer LQ for towing a small trailer with a golfcart or buggy. I had mine put on by the shop at the Bloomer factory. I could take a pic and email it to you.

Contact Gary Robb - he has listings here on HTW. He does it when hauling trailers to Expos and for having trailers shipped in to his dealership.

SOmetimes, for transport purposes, the pass side rear door is removed and a receiver hitch bolted to the wood flooring. Wouldn't work for your purposes though.

Be careful where you operate your double...as they are illegal in VA when it involves non-commercial vehicles...I'd research every state you would plan on operating...because maximum lengths come into play in several of them...and a double non-commercial almost begs the police to stop you... http://www.towingworld.com/articles/TowingLaws.htm
