Any suggestions/ideas on where to mount a 2nd spare tire.  Didn't want to fight with putting it in the mangers.  Don't have enough room where the original spare is as there are propane tanks, battery box, and hydraulic jack boxes there.  Thought about trying to put one under the nose but thought it might tear the sides of my truck bed off when I made a turn.  What about under the floor near the step up--will it come close to the ground when the truck starts to go up a hill?  It needs to be somewhere easy to get to in case I need it.  I am tired or throwing it in the bed everytime we go on a trip.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Do you have room to affix it directly to the first spare? Do you have running boards and can mount it on one of the rear side areas? My Sidekick has one mounted there, my Exiss spare is mounted on the bulkhead under the goose area. Either area is large enough for the attachment of a second spare mounted to the first tire. Do you have a hay rack? You could roof mount it, but you would need a ladder.

tom-tom... Just wondering, why you need the second spare tire? Is this a second trailer spare? Do you/are you having alot os flats?

This JCW list of carriers may help give you some ideas...

I  have only had one blow out and fortunately it was at low speed and didn't tear anything up.  My trailer is 40' long and 8' wide.  I fear that if I ever had another blow out that due to the weight shift or front tire blowing that it might take out the remaining tire.  I have been pulling this setup for about 5 years now and have only had one failure.  I am a nut about my tires.  In january I was in FL and had a rim go bad.  It developed a air leak in one of the welds.  It was nice knowing that I had a fresh spare waiting to go on should I have had a blow out on the road.  Piece of mind is worth a lot.  I already have the tire and wheel might as well keep it ready to use.

The way my spare is mounted on behind the truck it doesn't look like there is enough room, but I will check.  It has a piece of aluminum shaped to fit the bottom of the tire to hold it on on the bottom and a threaded rod where the lugs are, I guess I could get a welding shop to add on to that piece and extend the threaded rod to hold 2 tires.  I do have a rack and ladder, but I am usually full when we go camping and need the space for hay and shavings.

One thing I have found interesting is that the tires on the passenger side tend to run a couple of degrees hotter than the ones on the drivers side.  Kind of weird.  I figured the head side of the horses would be hotter.  My trailer has a slide out on the head side and the tanks (Fresh, Black, Gray, Fuel, Genset) are all on the head side just figured it would be heavier.  Same tires all the way around with same tire pressure.  On a hot summer day fully loaded running 70-75 on the intersate in Ga my Goodyear tires run about 125 degrees the tire that blew was a chinese tire and it was running about 155 degrees on state hiways about 55-60 mph.

I agree with gard, our Sundower goosneck has the tire under the gooseneck and there is enough room to add longer bolts/studs, then add a small piece of wood or metal to the bottom support to hold both tires and bolt them on.

I always figured that right side ran a little hotter because of the crown in the road... That makes the trailer lean a little to the right, horses in a slant will rest their butt on that curb side wall and their front feet end up about in the middle of the trailer. So alot of the horse weight is from the middle to the far right side. Now, get rid of those Chinese tires and if you're running a load range G, 235-85R16's, then buy a set of Goodyear G614RTS's... Load range E, Michelin XPS-Rib. Both are steel casings and run cool because of the non agressive tread pattern.

Both of our gooseneck horse trailers have the spare mounted under the gooseneck on the right side front wall. Plenty of room when turning. My flatbed has a 215/75R17.5 mounted underneath the trailer between the frame rails..... If I ever have a flat, I'll need a wrecker just to get the spare out of and, back into the carrier!!! What ever you do, don't mount it under the trailer floor!!!

I have the factory spare on its original mount under the overhang of the gooseneck, passenger side.  The flatbed has a 9' bed, so there is not enough clearance for a spare in front of the orginal spare.  Seems that would be a lot of leverage on the mounting hardware etc.  What I do have is 2 spares mounted vertically, side by side,  on the headache rack of the flatbed, one for the truck, and one for the trailer.  We have 3 gooseneck trailers that the spare on the headache rack will fit, so we, in effect, have two spares with the three rigs, the dovetail flatbed, the stock trailer, and the LQ trailer.

A square shaped "U" bolt is available. It is used on boat trailers to go around a box frame and through the stud holes of a rim. A spare tire can then be placed anywhere on the frame that has enough clearance for the tire.

The bolt could be inserted inside your present wheel and out through the stud holes of a second rim, bolting one rim to another. No welding or fabrication would be necessary, and it could be added or removed as you needed the second wheel.

Here's one example;

A piece of all thread could also be bent to shape and utilized.

Mine is a 9'4" bed and a 2nd spare fits fine on it. I used a 5"x 12"x 1/4" piece of flat steel painted black used 2 bolts to bolt it flat on top of the origianl spare mount, then got 2 long all thread bolts that fit into the hole for the lugnuts on the first spare, put nuts on them to hold them inplace while installing the 2nd spare, then install cover on the 2nd spare... Most people never no there is 2 tires there.... Will try and get pictures if it ever stops raining..

Ours is actually mounted under the front of the trailer and cranks down like the spare on a truck. You use the trailer jack handle to crank it down. Since I have owned it since September, my plan is to drop it every couple of weeks or maybe monthly and keep it lubricated.

I have my spare tires (2) mounted on the sides of my trailer in front of the fenders.  I moved the original mount out from under the gooseneck.  I didn't like it there, I never failed to bump or rub up against the tire while hooking up and kept getting dirty.

Genebob,

How did you mount it? Was it a kit or homemade? Thought about going to the junkyard and getting the hardware off a wrecked truck but didn't know how good it would work.

tom-tom- It was there when we bought the trailer new. I think the conversion company must have done it so they could mount the LP tanks and battery box.

I was a little concerned about it getting ripped off if I go through a dip or rough terrain, but it seems to sit high enough and I guess if it did, it would be done before the black and grey tanks.

I can't remember the name of the conversion company, but I'll try stop by the trailer and look sometime today. You could probably give them a call for more info.
