Location: Tucumcari NM | I have huge plate glass windows in what I call my coffee room. It is a room I built on the back of the house overlooking the yard, corral, etc . I have a pot of coffee early every morning and just watch the goings on outside. This morning a male sparrow was getting a jump on the breeding season. He danced, strutted, sang, preened, and displayed his little heart out for a female who was watching from the fence. When the little fella decided that he had won the mating game and had earned reproduction rights, he siddled up to the watching female and tried to collect on the bargain. Instead, she beat the tar out of him and flew away. The little guy sat on the ground with his wings hanging, beak open and panting. I have never seen a more dejected animal! Just when he thought nookie was in the bag, and all was for naught! Poor bird! Marla |
