I am about to post an add for our used trailer but I wanted to know the safest way to get paid.  I know some people can forge a certified check if it is work their while.  The only full proof way I can think of is direct transfer if their bank is the same as ours or cash.  The trailer will list for $7995 which is too much for us to lose in case we receive a bad check.  I'd appreciate your expertise and experiences.  Thanks

Keep the trailer until the check clears the bank.

As said keep trailer and title untill check clears. Electonic transfer through your banks or paypal. You just can't trust anyone these days better safe than sorry. Or better yet cash on pick up.

A wire transfer is the safest. If some one wants to pay with a cashier's check, if you call the bank it is drawn on (don't use the number on the check- look it up in the phone book, internet, or use directory assistance) you can verify that it is not stolen or forged. If someone is buying long distance, I like to have them fax me a copy of the check ahead of time. That way it gives me time to check the validity. But unless you both bank at the same bank and can pull it right out of their account, a wire transfer is the safest. Good luck!

At $8,000 the buyer won't have any issues bringing cash, it's when it gets over $10K that cash can be a problem, but I have swapped trailers/cash in Truck Stops to the tune of about $40K. Did I say that I prefer CASH.

Cash or Wire transfer only!!!! Sometimes it can take as long as 6 months to find out that a cashiers check is fraudulent.....If something isnt right it can get lost for a bit then come back to BITE you. Bank to Bank transfers only. I keep a separate account for this, then take the money out of it and move it to another account. Never can be too safe!

CASH ONLY or wire transfer from a bank or credit union!  NO CASHIERS CHECKS, money orders, personal checks or wire transfers from Western union!  Even cashiers checks can come back on you after your bank clears it!  Been there done that!
