Why are so many people putting generators on the roof? I always heard they are hard on the fuel pump... Is there an advantage? I do notice people we know who have theirs on the roof are much louder.

ours is on the roof and the fuel tank also, no problem fueling it at the truck stop but is a pain using a gas can but it hold 30 gallons so it will run along time per fill up, as far as being loud I have never noticed it being any louder than those on the ground.

The main reason for mounting them on the roof is it frees up "inside" storage space. They are typically mounted under the saddles or in a manager, by putting it on the roof frees up this space.
In regards to being louder, IMO it has more to do with the quality of the unit and how it is mounted.

mine came from the factory with it there , I think it is legal as long as it has a roll over valve in it and I would think where ever it is that should be a requirement. Ours is inside of a hay pod.

our generator is built in on the walkway for the hay pod, and the fuel tank is in the manger below. its a nice set up for us and is not noisy and doesn't vibrate the trailer.
