Looking at upgrading and would like some feedback on the DEF. those who have it, is it a lot of hassle? Is your fuel mileage better? more power? Please give me the good bad and ugly.

I drive a 2015 chevrolet 3500 4x4 diesel single cab and single rear wheel. DEF is a minor annoyance. Its about $30 for five gallons. This is my second truck that uses DEF. Its easy to refill and varies on how long it lasts. We recently took a trip to NM with the trailer, that weights about 14,000 lbs to 15,000 lbs. We were getting about 11 mph going 82 mph. Drove about 5000 miles and never refilled it. This truck seems to be using less DEF than the same truck that was a 2011. One doesn't see the black smoke from the diesel which is a good thing. I really don't mind it at all.

Because the manufacturer is able to tune the engine any way it wants to, and then allow the SCR and DEF to take care of the pollutants, most manufacturers have discovered better fuel mileage (compared to other smog-reduction systems). Truckmakers claim it improves fuel mileage by as much as 5 percent.

I traded in my 2010 dura max with no DEF for. A new 13 with DEF, same trucks. The power, torque and fuel mileage with the new truck is truly noticeable I used to pull up the Guadalupe mountains at 30 mph, now I pull the same hill with the same trailer and horses at 65 mph. Mileage went from 6 to 10-12 mpg pulling. Define worth the 12 dollars every few thousand miles to add DEF
