Your furnace is electrically controlled and started, but runs on propane. You need battery voltage to start and operate your furnace.

Thanks Gard!  So is that sorta like it has an electric start (battery can supply this)  pilot light?  but then the air is still forced with propane? 

Just out of curiosity...is the gas powered water heater controlled the same way?

The hot furnace air is circulated with an internal 12v electric fan. The older hot water heaters used a pilot light, the new ones have electronic ignitions.
