Several of you were very encouraging about my wife taking on a colt, and I'd like to report a couple minor successes. My wife Tish had our yearling Sassy 1/2 way into the 2H trailer we bought, courtesy of apple-flavored treats. Sassy had been grazing around it for a couple of days and had sniffed it good, gotten familiar with it. Tish didn't push Sassy harder than that, taking it slow. It went so well that she didn't want to sour her on it by trying to go for more. Sassy is also becoming accustomed to being sprayed with the garden hose much more easily than I thought she would! She's starting to get the idea that the big comfy halter means she can graze and the nylon one with the pressure points means it's time to work. My wife hasn't tried a bridle/bit yet, she's looking at the different types trying to learn about them. So far all I've gleaned is that a curb bit is probably unnecessarily harsh, that maybe a half-cheek snaffle would be a good place to start with Sassy. Any suggestions/experiences on this would be welcome.

Glad to hear that you are having success with your filly.  Grain, hay, and patience gets them in there too.  NOthing like really needing to take one somewhere and being pressed for time and them not wanting to load.  MIght as well start early on them and not even have anywhere to go, makes it easier on both of you.  I recommend starting a young one with a side pull. They have them with or without bits on them and usually the bit is just a ring bit, which is also good to start a baby with.  They have them at McKinney's, I am sure you are famililar with them LOL.  You could talk to either of the "ricks" there or danny and they are most helpful.  Sounds like progress is being made with the little girl.  Keep up the good work!!
