After having to buy 4 new Goodyear Marathon Trailer tires this weekend, and tossing 4 excellent treaded tires with dry rot cracks on the side, I was asked by my close friend who owns the tire dealership "why I don't use tire covers"? With a dumb look on my face, I just said that I really hadn't given it any thought. I have to admit, after she posed the question, I really felt stupid! She said it could double the life of my tires since I don’t ware them out before they dry rot. So that’s the project at hand this week. I use my trailer often, but one side does receive a great deal of direct sunlight each day.
Some of the ones I’ve seen are made of canvas and others of vinyl. I’m assuming the vinyl should hold up better, but what happens to the moisture under the vinyl? And does the canvas keep out the UV rays? Any suggestions or comments?

If this is just to cover your tires while parked at home, you can also cut a piece of plywood to fit in your fender wells. I have heen many RV's do this. Granted not something you would want to have to haul with you. I am potentialy facing the same situation and not looking forward to it. Maybe with the price of fuel we'll have to let the trailer sit and be used as a guest house.

A guest house, thats an idea! Ours will stay parked a little longer this season too! I ended up spending around $75 for an open show this past weekend by the time I took the trailer in for tires, picked the horse up, drove to the show and back home. It's just not wroth it for three classes! I keep asking myself "WHY"????? May have to look a little deeper this year!

Yup, plywood, the cheapest, easiest way to cover your tires. Also keeps our cows from chewing on them! MIne is parked out on our ranch along with the cattle goosenecks, and the weather is horrible on tires out there. I use mine alot from the time especially in the summer, every weekend and some full weeks. So it's moved alot and used, but when winter hits them tires are covered, and covered in the summer too, protect from the sun................

I buy a couple of tarps and cover the tires with them along with some pieces of wood on the tires and the bottom of the tarp to hold them down. It's always hot down here, so I keep them covered all the time except when actually using the trailers. I also spray them with a protectant when I remember....
