I have a horse that is preganant i think she has been exposed to a stallion last April. but I'm not sure if she stuck. Her udder is swollen and sore to the touch she also has edema under her belly but she is not sore under her belly. Is there anything that I should be looking for or can do for her. Thanks for any suggestions you can give

My mare did the same last year (first baby) and I believe it is not all that uncommon. I found equinereproduction.com to be a very informative, useful site. It is dedicated entirely to breeding issues like this and the moderator is extremely helpful. Great for first time "moms" like myself who wanted some reassurance.

When her teats start waxing or maybe even dripping, she is getting rady to foal. Look at her hips and see if she is shrink around her tail head, also a good indicator. Good idea to have a foal size dose of tetnus vaccine on hand, we like to give it within the first couple of hours of birth. Usually horses can do everything in birthing by themselves, but you want to be checking to make sure the sack breaks. Good luck! The only thing better than a new born foal is your own kids!

If she was exposed last April, Your baby would be here. My mare dropped her foal today. She was bred 8th & 10th of May.
This mare never waxes up or drips. But her udders did swell a lot in the last 3-4 days. She gets real soft and spongy feeling around her tail head and those big muscles at the back of her hips. She starts to "Dance" a lot. Just can't stand still, No comfortable position.

I have seen one case where a mare went almost 13 months...so I wouldn't say 100% that you'd have your foal by now but it sounds like she's making progress!

Is she caught up on her vaccinations? Do you have a good vet 'just in case' you need one? Have you been giving her extra food and vitamins so she and the foal start out healthy? You could probably get good info with a book from your local library. And don't forget your local feed store...There are usually people around with lots of expertise who will be glad share what they know. Good luck! Call your vet. Take pictures and post them too!
